Wests Tigers skipper Robbie Farah wants football to do his talking

Robbie Farah has set himself a goal of a different kind this year. While leading the Tigers to premiership glory and retaining his representative jumpers obviously tops Farah's 2015 wish list, the Tigers skipper wants his football - not off-field woes - to dominate headlines this year.

After a troubled 2014 season where Farah was put under the microscope for a host of decisions happening off the field at the Tigers, he feels more settled heading into this year.

While his on-field form did not dip, Farah is confident he can only improve without the distractions of recent seasons and under the guidance of new coach Jason Taylor.

"That wasn't nice," Farah said of a forgettable last season. "Hopefully we can just talk about footy this year.

"Hopefully _focused on just playing footy and not getting too involved with everything that's written. Stuff is always going to be written. If we start losing a couple of games in a row people will start writing stuff. But you've got to believe in the group here and believe in what you're doing right as a team.\
\
"And not worry about anyone external, they can say what they want."\
\
Much of the Tigers' recent success has rested on Farah's shoulders as they look to return to the finals for the first time since 2011.\
\
But with a settled and exciting halves combination of Luke Brooks and Mitchell Moses, plus the return from injury of James Tedesco, Farah will be relieved of some of the playmaking pressure he has had to carry.\
\
"The halves are growing in confidence," Farah said. "They'll be better for having a season under their belt last year.\
\
"That will only get better when Teddy [Tedesco] gets back. Everyone saw how good a player he is in the first 10 rounds of last year. He is due for a bit of luck. He has worked hard on his injuries and is looking good and sharp. Between the four of us hopefully we can guide the team around."\
\
Taylor's focus has been on stiffening up a Tigers side that leaked the most points in the NRL last year. After a solid start to last year, the Tigers fell away late in the season, including scores of 64 and 48 against them in successive weeks. Farah said he expected a much improved defensive unit this year.\
\
"For us and JT defence is our No.1 priority," Farah said. "You never go out there to concede points, but last year for one reason or another we fell away with our D. There were a couple of games there where we had some really big blowouts. That's disappointing when you let the scoreboard get away from you.\
\
"If you're going to lose you want to walk off with your head held high. We are working on our structure and different sort of things that can help us in D.\
\
"When a new coach comes in with new ideas, we need to adapt to that and buy into it. "We make mistakes some times because it's new to us, but each day we are reviewing it and seeing where we went wrong and where we can get better."\
\
The Tigers - filled with NSW Cup players - had their first hitout of the seasonon Friday night, losing 26-4 to Wentworthville.\
\
The NRL squad will get their first taste of action when they play the Eels in Alice Springs on Friday night, while Campbelltown Stadium will host their final pre-season match against Cronulla on February 21.\

I hate when we get whacked and a player says "it's disappointing"… getting beat by 50 is devastating, not disappointing. Well that's the attitude I wish they had.

I hate when we get flogged, the fans walk out upset and peeved for the next 3 days and the players are laughing and having a giggle with the opposition

You have to love football speak

"Defence is our No 1 priority"

So what you are essentially saying that the last 12 years in grade Robbie it hasn't been

Be honest Robbie, say half the squad isn't up to it , we played like we didn't give a stuff for the last six weeks and if we don't improve everyone's heads should be on the line at season's end including my own

When you're being paid big bucks either way, it's disappointing not devastating. I'm no longer convinced that Farah is in it for the club. Having been named a Tiger for life, he has reached his goal in club football and his motivation now comes from rep football glory. I might well be proven wrong (I am happy to be) but last year's episode left a very sour taste.

gee n.t tiger you are being a bit hard on Robbie . he has been at the club over 10 years now not always on big $ , he carries the defence week in week out 40 to 50 tackles a game he makes more breaks . and as for reached his goal in club football b/s he would love to captain a grand final winning side . I also remember Parramatta offered more $ for him some time back but he stayed with west please every one get off robbies back :sign:

Dear Lord the Farah bashing continues…..what a pack of dogs.

Woof Woof

We could quite as easily say the same about the "no this year is going to be different talk ' , but its Robbie so that's OK

Simon,I don't wish to Robbie bash, however there is certain expectations of a club captain,he has to fulfil those expectations irrespective of what he percieves are goals or wants for himself personally.

Leading by example on and off the field is one of those expectations

This is what I think most want from our captain and no more of the dramas which unfolded last year…

The MINUTE Farah leads us to a classic victory all the haters will turn into lovers. The MINUTE we lose and Farah has a poor one the media will talk about disharmony and everyone will believe it.

This guy grew up playing junior league, loved it, was good enough at it to make the grade, make captain, make Origin and play for Australia. Anyone with his ability would have done it, he didn't ask for the associated crap that came with it and that includes so called fans on a forum laying the boot in at any given moment. It's 2015, these posts can and are read by the players without a doubt. How would you like it if anonymous nuffies lambasted you for everything you say and do. Go outside and go fishing, play with your kids or go for a run, you, me, Farah and the world would be better off if you just shut your mouth and do something constructive. Come back when you have real opinion of merit to share.

I understand the views defending Robbie as a player. I agree that he is and has been, one of the greatest on field contributors to Wests Tigers. However in my opinion, that does exonerate him from criticisms of his behaviour.
To make it clear, I'm happy he is a Wests Tigers player, rather than him being somewhere else. I will be even happier if he can let his play define him instead of his talk, and happier still if he can truly lead by positive example. I wait to be convinced, because at the moment I'm not. As I said I'l be happy to be proven wrong. Wests Tigers and supporters will be the beneficiaries.

Yeah, i don't think that's gonna happen. The true supporter card has been played out so much its kind of considered a joke now

We should not bash Farah he's a true Tiger but I hope we put up the …..Farah proof fence .....because what he did last year was a dog act .....and people who don't see it that way are just lying to them self

They shouldnt be read by the players…why on earth would players give a rats what mug fans think??
If they are listening to the fans they'll soon be sitting with them.

Criticism from experienced RL commentators is another thing....some valuable lessons can be learned there, but shit stirring media and anonymous nuffies on the net like you and me should be avoided by them and if theyre not - as we saw last year - well then thats NOT how a proffessional outfit is run.

New season - clean slate for all players is how I see it....but yeah its hard to forget how he failed as a (C) last year
Failed big time
Hes lucky to still have the honour

Criticism of any player isn't an issue, It's a footy forum thats what happens on these websites.

The issue is when forumers refuse to cut players (Lawerence, Farah, Galloway) a break, continually bashing the same player for unjustified reasons. Even if the bashing was justified, it's 2015 for God's sake build a bridge and get over it. Are we seriously going to have to put up with the whole Robbie/Potter issue every time we lose, he has a quite game or is interviewed ?

I personally wasn't happy with how my then favourite player and club captain handled the situation at the back end of 2014 but that doesn't mean we need to bring it up every bloody time someone mentions his name.

In a recent thread I'd say 90% of posters rated him the best if not in the top 3 ever wests tigers players. He is our club captain, a tiger for life, has stayed for less money, bleeds wests tigers and has carried us since 2007\. One blemish and supporters still can't let it go 6 months on.

With the above in mind I'm willing to give him another chance, some posters should consider buying into giving a club legend a second chance. Then again that's just my opinion.
