Field goals in 2012

Should wests-tigers kick more field goals in season 2012.

or would it make them too predictable, and give opponents the mind frame that wests-tigers cannot score tries?

we kicked 7 if im not mistaken, tied with $ouff$ for the most - sandow nailed all seven for them, whilst robbie kicked 4 and benji kicked 3 for us.

Field goals have their place - e.g game winner in extra time vs the knights, and can usually put the exclamation on the end of a half of football - e.g like the 49-12 win vs canberra, or can put a game just out of reach - e.g - against the dragons in the 21-12 win.

I don't think its predictable, and considering we had three or four field goal merchants on the fields most times throughout the year you never know who's gonna slot one over

The only thing ill say is, i'd rather see our boys winning games by 10-20 points, and not ever have to feel they NEED to go for the field goal as an option. When you just get by in games, you tend to attempt more field goals to do it.

If its 12-all with 20 to go and a team gets a penalty under the sticks, the obvious thing to do is take the shot, and no one questions it. Yet, if a team takes a shot at field goal with 20 to go they are trying to shut up shop. A lead is a lead. Its better to leave with a point and the lead instead of kicking the ball dead

I see your point (no pun intended) there is really no difference between a field goal and penalty goal with 20 to go, but they are viewed differently.

A field goal attempt is your own choice.

Thats the difference.

Its a mental thing…oppositions will use a FG as momentum, inspiration, telling each other ''thats all they got''...and believe the leading team will try to defend the 1 point lead...I believe even without realising it teams can get into this frame of mind....thus why its preferable to leave the fg attempt in a deadlock to as late as possible

I like the field goals that Robbie and Benji have sometimes potted just before half time when no one is expecting it. Saved our butt, in a tight second half, on more than one occasion. Smart thinking, I reckon.

When I was playing, if a side was hammering my end of the feild but we were keeping them out and they kicked a field goal we would say 'we've got these pussies'….and usually it would pump us up enough to come back. As Ink said, it totally gives the defending side a mental advantage as it portrays a lack of confidence in attack.

One pointers should be used to remove any chance of a side scoring late and forcing extra time...ie up by 6 with 2 to go, if the opportunity is there take it. The only other time would be right on half time.

Saw a team kick a field goal as the first scoring point in the game around 35 years ago within the first ten minutes of the start of the game But it didn't help them did it Watto

Agree with Yoss and Ink though it depends on the circumstances A lead is a lead no matter how many minutes left

And games always usually come back to defence and you've sometimes got to back your defence and hope it is better than the oppositions attack

In regards to kicking the field goal too early in the game with scores deadlock, I recall Andrew Johns saying that he thought it was never too early because if you take the field goal early (say 20 mins to go) there isn't any pressure to make it from the opposition, whereas kicking a 1 pointer with 5 mind to go the opposition knows what your doing and increases pressure on the kicker.

Not too mention if the field goal is attempted early and is missed, you will most likely get to attempt it again, as compared to missing with 5 mins to go, you will most likely not get another shot.

I think as long as you are prepared to keep attacking after a successful field goal and defend even harder with the increased pressure of a one point lead, a field goal is a great option to win a tight game.
