First 5 Rounds- A tough Start

The Wests Tigers need to hit the ground running, if we are not going to have the same problem , as we have had the last 5 years ,of playing catch up to make the semis. The first 5 rounds is a very tough ask, IMO, to get more than 2 or 3 wins out of 5 games, especially if we play like last Sunday.

I know it was just a trial, but the team seem to have all the bad components of the WT style , thrown into one 80 minute game.It is amazing that we still haven't work out the key players in the 4 key positions of 1,6, 7 & 9 and that the front row stock is still so skinny.

I think it would be awesome if the Wests Tigers were sitting on 6 or 8 points after the first 5 rounds 😛ray: , but I have a gut feeling it will be only 2 wins out of 5 😕
What do you all think?

Here is the tough run we have…...

Round 1 Mon, Mar 15 @ 7:00 PM -Wests Tigers Vs Sea Eagles @ Sydney Football Stadium
Round 2 Sun, Mar 21 @ 3:00 PM - Roosters Vs Wests Tigers @ Sydney Football Stadium
Round 3 Fri, Mar 26 @ 7:35 PM - Wests Tigers Vs Eels @ Sydney Football Stadium
Round 4 Sun, Apr 4 @ 3:00 PM - Raiders Vs Wests Tigers @ Canberra Stadium
Round 5 Sat, Apr 10 @ 7:30 PM - Cowboys Vs Wests Tigers @ Dairy Farmers Stadium

Hopefully we keep our good record in round one matches. (We are 7 wins -3 losses in rd 1)
We are a good shot coming up against Manly who may have some attacking troubles with a new halves combo (although we have the same problem our attack is rarely able to produce less than three tries).
Round two against the Roosters is a Sunday afternoon game which we seem to enjoy.
Round three v Eels will be very tough but like us the Eels are usually slow starters to the season.
Round four v Canberra is one we should win on paper but they are a different team in Canberra.
Round five against Cowboys is the same situation as the game v Canberra.
So I think three wins from five is definetely possible anything more would be a bonus.

It looks like our job in Canberra could have just been made easier.

Former Test winger Joel Monaghan looks set to miss the opening five rounds of the NRL season with the Canberra star to undergo surgery on a broken thumb on Wednesday.

Monaghan suffered multiple breaks in his left thumb after making a tackle in the dying stages of Saturday night's 32-24 loss to Brisbane at Ballymore.

The 27-year-old visited a specialist on Tuesday, where it was confirmed he would require surgery and an eight week recovery period.

The layoff would see Monaghan miss the opening five rounds of the competition, with his earliest possible return being against the Sydney Roosters in mid-April.

Monaghan played for NSW in game two of last year's State of Origin series, but the early season setback could hurt his chances of unseating incumbents Michael Jennings and Josh Morris for the opening game of the 2010 series.

Backrower Joel Thompson has been named to replace Monaghan in the centres for the club's final trial against Canterbury in Dubbo on Saturday night.

On paper at full strength I reckon the Tigers should win 4/5, however with Tuiaki out, and Tuqiri not arriving until possibly round 4, a huge responsibility falls on the Tigers forwards to aim up and lay a platform for the backline.

I think considering its only start of the season 2 wins although not great would probably be good enough. We also finish strong so youd think if we could win 3+/5 then that would be a great start.

Agree with the last 2 posts.
The starts not the important part, the finish is.
As long as were at least midfield after five weeks I shant be too concerned

Need the early wins,
im picking a mid season slump due to extended rep duties for Farah, Moltzen, Galloway NSW and Tuqiri QLD.
Chooks, Faders, Cowgirls = Highly Probable
Manlee and Slipperies = Possible

Fans will have a lot to do with it. The first 3 rounds all at the same ground. No its not Leichhardt or Campbelltown but if we get there and get behind them for those 3 weeks then we are in with a chance to win all three. One might be a Roosters home game but it wont be difficult to out number their fans.

I would be very happy with 3 wins from the first 5 but realistically if Fonzie picks the players in the positions that we think he will it will be a miracle if we get 3/5\. I think we will win 1/5 or 2/5 tops.

We have extremely poor depth with an extreme lack of NRL experience. Promising youngsters and average recruits have to step up into a level they have not yet reached if we are gonna be successful if the first half dozen rounds.

So you doubt that the players we have will put in there all for the Wests Tigers jersey no matter what position they are selected in…. Bug....

Ah if only games where won in the dressing room or behind a keyboard...

FTW...4 from 5 should be the minimum expectation....tough start or not......

3 wins would be nice but comps arent won in March or April.

No ….but 1 extra win or draw instead of a loss in the first few rounds of '09 and '07 would have seen us qualify for the 8....2 wins in '08 would have done the trick and Mr 0 and 8 would be 4 from 8.....

If I hear after a close loss early to mid season won't cost us a spot in the 8 I'll......... :brick:

Good point made by triserratops, we need the early wins because no doubt injuries will strike throughout the year. Every game counts. Take none for granted. We need to win early on.

Minimum expectation for the players themselves I agree. We need bodies on the line, every man playing every minute like its their last on planet earth. That is what we need.

people are predicting cetain wins/losses due to tuiaki and tuquiri not being there, what about our halfback not being settled or ready? i think that is more important above all else and it will show like it has the past 3 seasons. moltzen needs to play here or it will be 09 all over again.

Don't worry about the first 5 rounds, this competition will go down to the wire till the last week. I'm willing to say by the last round the top 4 will be decided but the final 4 will be fought out by at least 8 teams. There wont be any easy teams and every game will be as tough as the next. Having said that, if we're mid way after the rep season finishes I'll be feeling pretty confident.

Chris, the last time I checked, the first 5 rounds of games were worth 2 pts each game, the same value as the midway games and as the last 6 or so games in the comp.

The evenness of this year's comp, makes the first 5 rounds even more important to a team's season success, IMHO.
