First coach sacked?

I feel for John. Hopefully he finds a job at another club. It will be interesting to follow Fitzgibbons progress without Uncle Nick's version of a salary cap.

John Morris has walked away after Sharks announce Fitzgibbon as their 2022 coach

Gotta feel for the bloke ...
What’s Fitzgibbon ever done ?

Very shabby organisation the guy has taken a pretty average team to 2 finals series...obviously the players did not like him .

I keep reading that Morris took an "average team" to the finals. That "pretty average team" made the finals 6 of the 7 years before he took over including winning the comp in 2016. In the two years that Morris took them tot he finals, both times they lost and were out first week.

To be fair they have had serious injuries and departures. I think he has done well . The decision from what I have heard is not about Morris.

POssibly, but the narrative is that he took an average team on and got them to the semis. He took over a successful team and they got worse.

Could be wrong but he's had to put up with ***awful signings like*** Dugan/***Fifita*** on major contracts, Josh and Brett Morris leaving, Gallen retiring. John Morris hasn't set the world on fire but he's developing well as a coach. Maybe if Flanagan was available and they booted Bomber for him, that'd be fair.

Awful signings like Fifita? Fifita was ON FIRE at the Sharks, got them to a GF. Was probably the best prop in the world at the time. Was Morris able to get the best out of him or has he declined over the last 2.5years?

As others mentioned, Fifita has had dodgy knees for a while- and regardless of retrospect, right now he's on way overs playing reserve grade.

Again....lovely bloke. Why is he "developing well" as a coach? On what metric? Everything has gone backwards since taking over. Lost players....who did he attract to the club? Who did he replace them with? Compare Morris recruitment to Madge (who gets crucified here for it).

He's bringing on guys like Tracey, Kennedy, Katoa, Brailey really well. Sharks have the nucleus good experienced players in Graham/Townsend/Johnson etc and youngsters are being brought on slowly. I don't think he has had the cap to attract players.

You need a lot to go right for you to get in to the Top 4, it takes 2-3 years to get there. As an interim coach, he's done well and they're building something. Fair enough if he was being sacked for a Flanagan or a Bellamy, but they're getting rid of him for an unproven coach.

Anyone have any idea what was wrong with Morris at the Sharks? Looked like a ragged, aged and over the hill squad two years ago and he's had them over-performing every year. Is it that they think Fitzgibbon will be even better or was there some problem with Morris? One would think a coach wouldn't be sacked if the board had confidence in him. Looks like a curious case.

Fitzgibbon will discover a Shark dollar won't go as far as a Rooster dollar.

Something like 15 sharks players off contract this season

They have probably gone backwards because they lost their Peptide supplier.

At least Morris is honest.

***He managed a difficult period well***. When he started he was only ever viewed as an interim option. He is a figure the NRL cannot afford to lose.

I agree he managed taht period well, I agree he seems a great bloke.

I see not tangible evidence that he is particularly good at the job and specifically in all the areas that Madge gets crucified in, Morris is measurably worse.

Morris doesn't have Maguire's experience but I believe the football he had the Sharks playing is far better than Maguire has WTs' playing.

He has them playing some great structures in attack and they have been competitive with the big
teams. I would definitely try to get him in some capacity at our club.

Chairman didn’t like the us versus management culture perpetuated by the coach. Wants to create an ‘in this together’ environment similar to Roosters where everyone from the cleaner to the Chairman are singing from the same hymn book. The Chairman there also has a black and white view of things. Once you get on his bad side you’re a sitting duck. This happened with their last CEO, CFO, head of football and now the coach who have all been sacked.... I kinda feel bad for Morris as the us vs management culture was started by the previous coach and he pretty much just continued it as though it was the norm. Wouldn’t surprise me if he had no feedback given to him by management along the way.
