Fit Lawrence pleads for Nines shot

He can't remember the last time he lasted an entire pre-season, but that won't stop Chris Lawrence pleading his new boss for a plane ticket to the Auckland Nines. The veteran Wests Tigers centre was like most of us earlier this year, mere lounge room witnesses to the inaugural short version of the game, as he rehabbed his injured ankle that cut short his pre-season. But now at full strength and with some much-needed December miles in his legs, Lawrence wants in on rugby league's answer to Twenty20 cricket over in Auckland next month.

"I didn't play [last year as] I was coming off ankle surgery. I'd love to have the chance to play this year, it's the first full pre-season I've had in a number of years. Hopefully I can get the chance to play," he told NRL.com. "I'd love to put my hand up, and it'd be really good for me to obviously get a run. It's a pretty exciting concept. Hopefully, fingers crossed, between now and then I stay injury free and get a crack at it."

Since recovering from his career-threatening hip injury in 2011, Lawrence has struggled to regain the kind of form that saw him picked for the Kangaroos in 2010\. In his past 37 games, he has crossed the stripe just seven times.

Last season, the St Gregory's graduate admitted battling form issues early in the year before again being hampered by an ankle problem. But now, with many teammates also at pains to stay on the field, Lawrence is finally enjoying a clean bill of health. "Two years ago was the first time I started pre-season healthy, but I got injured midway through," he said. "[Before that] I think it was '09 – actually probably earlier than that – that I've had a full pre-season. I haven't missed a session yet so fingers crossed I can continue and have a bit of a run without any injuries."

Lawrence said it was vital for him to complete the entire pre-season without any setbacks. "It's massive. It's really important, especially when you have particular lower injuries and you're an outside back and you're relying on that speed, power and agility," he said. "When you come back to full training two weeks before trial games, and you play a trial then you're into the season, it's hard to catch up on that much needed running you need in your legs. "For me this full pre-season in is definitely going to help me. I just want to hit the ground running in Round 1."

Good to hear. A friend (who lives here Chris) told me he played the backend of last season with a cracked rib, which I was unaware of. He's one though bugger. Hope he can regain some of the speed and swerve he had before the hip injury.

I would like to see him in the open format of the nines just for the point of gauging his speed (or lack of).
Too slow=second row

Sad lack of resources at the tigers has maybe stopped him living to his potential

Thanks for re-posting that video. I had forgotten just how fast he was. And his tackling technique…wow.

Runs a great line. Those length of the field tries were awesome.

can CL be the " marquee " player with u/20's players for the nine's side so farah, teddy, moses and brooks can watch at home and dont risk injury in a mickey mouse tournament.

Good to see he's wanting to prove himself. Great attitude.

Wouldn't expect anything less from Rowdy…..Improvement in him will go a long way in a successful season....

Most interesting thing in the article is that he refers to himself as an outside back. May suggest the rumour about him switching to the pack is just that, a rumour.

He still has the heart of a lion

Problem is , his brain has been writing cheques his body can't cash for a few seasons now

A Rowdy at even 90% of his 2009-2010 form would be a massive bonus for the WT's

But I have typed that comment a few times also

Time will tell

Talk is cheap, I hope I am wrong, but I don't think he can walk the talk :frowning:

Nobody can deny the heart of some of these guys, but every year they are fitter, faster, stronger with the best off season of their lives.

Remind me again in 2016

In my opinion he is finished. I have been saying it for two years. The niggles will only get worse as he gets older.

I hope to be proved wrong, and I do wish him a change of luck. However for me his speed is gone, and he has hands like feet. Plus his defensive reads are shocking.

People salivating about the old Lawrence are the same people that were salivating about of 05 Marshall in 2012-2013 suddenly coming back. The game has moved on and time aint stopping for these blokes

Hopefully a full pre-season will have him regain some much needed speed. He's one player who sorely needs a run of luck for a change as injuries always held him back from being a consistent NSW rep player IMO.

What "speed, power and agility" is he referring to?

Stop the propaganda and focus on catching, moving laterally and not rushing out of the line in defence.
