FOCUS ON OUR GAME NOT TOP FOUR SAYS TIM SHEENS

Wests Tigers Head Coach Tim Sheens says his players must not worry about making the top four, preferring they focus their energy on winning their final two games.

Speaking ahead of Monday night’s clash against the Gold Coast Titans at Campbelltown Sports Stadium, Sheens said it was a case of taking it one week at a time.

“I’ve spoken to the players for weeks now not to even consider it (making the top four). Just to win the games and see what happens,’’ Sheens said.

“It may or may not be in our control. All we can control really is trying to win these two games.

“I’m not even thinking about Cronulla yet. I am just worried about this week.

“We can’t finish out of the eight but we could finish as high as fourth or as low as eighth.

“ From our point of view, it is still pretty much head down and work hard for this game.

“We have talked about taking our eyes out of the rear vision mirror this week and making sure we keep our eyes on the road otherwise you find yourself crashing and burning.

“We have a lot to play for. Although we are technically in the eight, I keep reminding the guys to the game against the Roosters last year where are a decision in the last minute of the game went against us and we ended up losing that game.

“Luckily we got another chance to play Canberra and in beating them, we got a shot at the grand final qualifier. Without that opportunity to play that second game, we would have been out with that scrum disaster that happened in the Roosters game.

“We just remind ourselves that we need to be as high up as we can to get a second chance in the event of an issue like that happening.”

Sheens said five-eighth Benji Marshall must just focus on ‘doing his job’ for the team instead of producing some miraculous plays.

“I don’t want Benji to try to play better. We have been much better at just doing our jobs and not going for those low percentage plays that can sometimes plagued him and the team generally,’’ Sheens added.

“We need to play closer to what we think is semi-final footy. Our defence needs to be strong, our completions need to be high, and that’s been the case for the last month including Manly and St George-Illawarra. We have learnt a lesson from that.

“I don’t want to throw that away this week by going for the ‘Hail Mary’ type plays.

“We need to just win the game. I don’t care how we win it or by how much. We need to take the two points.”

Right on Tim…thats what we want to hear.

Its a dangerous juggling act as to how much you bridle Benji. He is a reactionary type of player who must still be allowed to play whats in front of him....that is his strength and at times his weakness. I dont agree with Tim that much during the season proper but around finals time I have complete confidence in his ability to get the most out of the boys.

Bring on the tits....get a good lead through hard work early on and then blow them off the park.

What Tim Sheens says on the last line sums it up perfectly, " We need to just win the game. I don't care how we win it or by how much. We need to take the two points".

It shows he is not interested in a massive scoreline, just wants the team to stay focussed and win.

I do 😛ray: that the team is not under the impression they can run on, and automatically win the game.

these remaining two games are extremely important for wests-tigers to remove any chinks in their armour, before the finals do arrive.
