Folkes to depart Concord for Dragons

genuinely believed we have looked the fittest and toughest in defence since folkes came along.

not happy that he's going but the role at the dragons suits him…

I know a lot on here really rate Folkes but I have yet to hear one valid reason for him being so good.

No big loss.

Folkes arrives, we make the semis after 4 years of nothing.

I doubt Folkes had anything at all to do with it. The players were the no 1 reason followed by the coaching staff.

Folkes is of course an integral member of the coaching staff. I'd rate him at about 20% below the performance of Cherry Mescia. The players improved by 20% and Sheensy by 5%.

Thats the key fact isnt it,& our success was built on the back of improved fitness & defence for which he gets credit.
As a seasoned coach he sees he has no future here,& frankly its probably in everyones best interests for him to move on to Dragons.
Good luck to him,& also Humphries who is totally blame free on this

I'd suggest Folkes had a lot to do with it….a very valid reason.
How many times last year did you hear it "We wouldnt have won this game or that game in previous years"?
We learnt to win ugly.....Folkes had a massive input there.
He'll be a big loss

How come we still manage to run out of puff before the end of the game, is Folkes a myth when it comes to fitness or do the coaches poorly manage the interchanges.
Good luck to Steve but there will be a lot of commuting between his home base and WIN Wollongong.

The truth is we'll never know because it is impossible to tell. My guess is that the fitness coach only has so much impact.

If you compare footy to to boxing or mma the primary deciding factor between two fighters is typically skill level. Sometimes strength counts. Sometimes speed counts. Sometimes cardio counts. Typically though skill is the deciding factor. Cardio, strength, speed etc are all also natural skills. Training them helps but it can only help so much.

Hard to really judge what sort of loss this will be. Looking form the outside, my gut tells me Folkes was a very good addition to our club. Personally i dont want to lose him, and the fact we are losing him to a "assistant coach" role is quite sad. Surely we could have provided him with such a role…....or maybe he had too much influence on the players for someones liking?????????, so the door was shown.

To me seem the perfect gig for Payten. So next year have the Sheens,Gentle and Payten team. Or maybe give Grant Jones the gig and give Payten the u20s role for 2012.

Maybe i am wrong but the players seemed fitter the last two seasons with Folkes here.

You might be right but you might be wrong. Either way it probably has very little to do with Folkes. It is more likely to do with injuries.

In either case I doubt the difference between Folkes and Mescia getting the most out of their fitness levels had much to do with making the semis.

To take the arguments put forward to the next level by the Folkes lovers here we could put a competitive 1st grade team together from the Wests Tigers forum if Folkes was our fitness coach. If you choose to believe that line of reasoning so be it.

Maybe they respected Folkes more than they did Mescia I mean Folkes was regarded as one of the fittest players of his time and put together the "dogs of war"

Folkes seems like he influenced the tigers a lot….then I look back at that finals series and see how unfit, how we blew EVERY game and then I question the fitness of our team.

Are you suggesting Folkes was to blame for us losing in the semi against the dragons and losing to the roosters.

I'm not blaming him. But the fitness levels in those games were absolutely shocking. We were dead at the 60 minute mark. More fitness and we win both those games.

Good luck to Folkes can't blame him for grabbing the chance to be an assistant coach must be a step up from the conditioning role and he's probably looking at being a head coach again one day.
