Fortnight to determine Benji's future

Benji Marshall is expected to decide during his club's June 6-18 bye period whether to accept an upgraded offer from Wests Tigers or set his sights on playing in the next Rugby World Cup and Olympics .

Marshall, who has received an approach from Super Rugby side the Blues to switch codes and return to New Zealand, intends to make a call before the June 19 clash with the Warriors at Leichhardt Oval.

After playing a leading role in the Tigers' best win of the season, against Melbourne, he wants to focus on Friday's clash with Cronulla and will then spend the following two weeks considering his future.

What decision he will make is unclear. Marshall has seemed happier in recent weeks as the Tigers recorded back-to-back wins over Canberra and Melbourne to move within two points of the top eight.

The recent run of success, which means the Tigers have won four of their past five matches, has also shored up the position of coach Mick Potter, whose future was being questioned by some within the club after seven consecutive losses.

At the time, the Tigers had been decimated by injuries and Marshall was struggling for form - prompting concerns about whether Potter was the right man for the job, particularly after his decision to bench Marshall against Canterbury.

''I am not denying that we have been through a very bad patch and I am not denying the fact that when you go through a bad patch the most vulnerable person is the coach, but we are talking about past history,'' Wests Tigers chairman Mike Bailey said.

''We are talking about how bad we went for seven weeks in a row, and I have got to say that I was biting my nails ahead of the game against the Cowboys thinking 'not another loss' but we turned it around there and we have continued to build on that. At that time I was worried - not just about the coach but the whole business - but since then we have been on an upward and onward situation.''

**Potter addressed the Tigers board last Thursday night and there was no discussion at the meeting about the possibility he may not see out his two-year contract.\
\
''We were hopeful at that stage that we would beat Melbourne, we have beaten Melbourne and I think that should put to bed some of the rumours and stories that may have been around during that bad patch we suffered,'' Bailey said.\
\
Fairfax Media was told that even when the Tigers were at rock bottom those prepared to consider sacking a second coach within a year would not have the support to do so. Not only are the Tigers still paying Tim Sheens, but officials are also mindful of falling into the same boom-bust cycle as Parramatta, who have had four coaches in the past six seasons.\
\
Marshall was unhappy about being dropped to the bench for the round-eight clash with the Bulldogs but Fairfax Media was told he had never suggested to any Tigers official that Potter should be sacked. However, he is disappointed that a proposed contract extension until 2017 is no longer on the table and the Tigers are now only offering him an upgrade on the remaining two years of his current deal.**
The Tigers have boom halves Luke Brookes and Mitchell Moses coming through the ranks but their dilemma is that the 28-year-old Marshall may not hang around.

Marshall's manager Martin Tauber received a new offer for an upgraded contract last Friday but the Tigers are competing with the lure of a Rugby World Cup and playing sevens for New Zealand at the 2016 Olympic Games. ''Benji is contracted with the club until the end of 2015,'' Tigers chief operating officer Grant Mayer said.

It's a good offer for benji. Just don't see why he has to be making these decisions 2 1/2 years out. I don't think the tigers would be in a position to promise him anything with so long to run on his contract…

I agree. Why the hell is a contract extension for 2016 & '17 even impacting this year? Ridiculous.

I suspect it's because, as Gordie Tallis said on MMM yesterday, the players are so used to ruling the roost at the Tigers, that if Benji says he wants an extension now, it should be granted now.

Benjis dreaming if he thinks he will walk into the All Blacks side

he doesn't have a good enough kicking game and Dan Carter is a far better Five eight than Benji will ever be

I don't think he does. That's just what the herald said to sell copies. If I were him I'd be worried if I could even make the Kiwis side, where he is proven to be good. Dropped as captain and dropped to the bench should give him a good idea that he wouldn't just walk into the all blacks OR kiwis anymore.

Also, all these people saying that it's 2.5 years away. It's NOT. Wests Tigers have officially stated that Benji may ask for a release (which he will be granted) and thus, he can quite easily leave the tigers at the end of the year for union or wherever. He'll respond to the offer around the bye, before round 19 vs warriors i believe.

He is just trying to force the Tigers hand. I love Benji, but he isn't worth the money he is probably commanding (besides Marketing) in his current form. Especially when it might mean saying goodbye to a exciting young tallent in Moses.

As I said before, we can't carry the guy for another 5 years. Until last Saturday night, he was looking like more of a hinderance than help.

I think Benji can see the writing on the wall if he doesn't sign now. The Tigers should push back here, lock in Moses and Brooks till 2017 and then negotiate with Benji once he finds some form. If he walks, he walks.

Yeah I'm happy with a contract extension, but from now till the end of 2016 he has to earn the right. Let's not forget, an increase in his contract, in line with a cap increase was black and white on paper, but a contract extension was in, well nowhere.

I think the article loses a lot of credibility when it says June twice, yet it's the first of July.
I don't believe anything other than quotes when it comes to media.
Seeing him yesterday I would be surprised if he would even think realistically about leaving the Tigers.

Not to mention saying he was benched against bulldogs

My gut feeling is he'll stay put. Word is the offer is a fair offer relating to his value on and off field. His manager has described the talks as being positive and the key point is that Benji himself would love to stay. It's fairly well known he could earn more elsewhere but for me the biggest indicator on his future was how the club viewed him. So far, cutting all the media dribble out, it appears that both parties are not far off where they'd like to be.

Deja vu anyone? Last time it was Japan, this time it is NZ.

He does not want to play for another NRL club because no other club will pay what Wests will pay him.

Joining the Auckand Blues makes sense for Benji, it'd be a smart career move. He's idolised in the Auckland area, would be joining a very strong programme, probably make the bench for the AB's and almost certainly be drafted into the Sevens programme in the lead up to the Olympics. NRL Premiership, possible RWC winner and likely Olympic Gold medalist. That'd challenge Brad Thorn's CV

The guy probably wrote it a few days ago? I'm not saying its 100% factually correct but jeez….not like he said it's september.

I think he'll stay. He'd be throwing away alot of the work he has done to get a head start in the media post footy. I don't see as much interest in him if he spends his twilight years in NZ. Sure they would find a role for him over there in the media, but you would think he would have much greater opportunities in Aus after his footy career finishes.
Dont forget the wife factor (remember Prince). Would she want to leave family and friends for NZ. His mother and brothers are settled here too. Even if he wanted to go, I'd think he would want his family to follow and thats big ask, especially for his younger bothers.
Word is he'd have to take a pay cut to play unioin too. I don't see it happening.

He'll stay here, he is our franchise player….not our best, but when you talk to any other supporter about the Tiges, Benji is always first player mentioned - in either a good or poor light. This goes a long way towards proving that to everyone associated with League in the wider community, Benji is the face of the Wests Tigers still. You only had to witness the pure joy his team mates emitted when he scored the other night to realise he is still loved and respected by the playing group. When Timmy Simona made his second break, Benji was the only player within 50 meters of him and it was his experience that kept that play going until more support arrived in the form of Robbie and Aysh. Our attack is looking better and will only improve and when it does, I am certain many on here will change their tunes as Benji will be at the center of it.

Whilst agreeing his game needs improvement, I would be shattered if he wasnt a 1 club player and didnt finish his career with us. I think the club will organise more dosh, his expectations may drop a tad - they'll meet halfway and he'll stay and in doing so will help the youngsters become great players and along with Robbie, lead us to a premiership in 2015.

LOL read it again

journalism is at an all time low

I'd at least like to see him play out his current contract. By that stage I'm confident Brooks and Moses will be ready to kick on
