Forwards in 2010

Do we have a lack of forwards in 2010? While noone will claim any of these to be great players we will be loosing Halatau, Galea, Payne, Trimarchi and likely Skandallis + Laurie. Thats on top of what is an already very short forward pack. And obviously the huge concern is the lack of depth. What happens if theres injuries? Its not uncommon to have 3-4 forwards out like this year. And even though Sheens described what happened this year as us being savaged by injuries, other clubs had it as bad as us this year, the only difference when it happens to us we look so weak cause of the quality we bring in isnt really up to it. If I try and pencil in our forward pack for 2010 I just cant see whats happening.

8\. Gibbs
9\. Farah
10.Galloway
11.Ellis
12.Heighno
13.Flanagan

14.Payten
15.Fulton

To me thats the only proven first graders we have (and that includes Flanagan who we havent seen and Fulton whose hardly inspired at 1st Grade level). Then we have a long list of possible players who are in the mix…but you cant just expect a group of 7 kids or so to step up to First Grade Level. if by this time next year say 2 of the following had turned into ok first grade players then i think we would of done well.

J Schirnack
Al Schirnack
Mataka
Dwyer
fifita
woods
Gower

Are we in some trouble?

I don't think we're in any trouble.. Have a look at the forwards in our 20's and State cup sides (Wests and Balmain) and some of our SG Ball kids. We have plenty of good forwards in the State Cup they just need Sheens to give them a go…eg. Gower, Farlow, Schirnack, McGuinness, Webster, Mataka, Hawkins, Davidson, Stolk, Rysko. Can't understand why Gower in particular hasn't been given more of a go.

I can see where you guys are coming from but the young blokes need developing like Galloway did.We can't expect the Shirnak's the Fifita's & all the other promising forwards comming through the ranks to be stars straight away.If Galloway ,Gibbs or Payton get injured again we will be introuble again. That's why its important we get an experienced prop. The plus is now we have Folkes on board & i can see our forwards developing quicker under his guidence

Now we've got Folkes there we've got a strapper, head coach in waiting, assistant coach, water boy (whatever his title is) who actually has a clue in identifying & coaching forwards.
Hopefully he'll bring some of the young guys through & get sheens to actually give them a chance.
If he does than I think we've got reasonable depth.

People are dreaming if they think the u20's and state league players can make the transition to fgrade in quick time, especially forwards. Look how long it has taken Gibbs and Galloway to make the grade. If we have any long term injuries in the forwards in 2010 and their will be, we will struggle again just like in previous years. Look at the difference Skando made this year, experience and plenty of it.

I just cant see how we can sign 2 reserve grade outside backs and ignore the forwards–madness

The club has promoted a couple of young forwards in the Schirnack brothers, Mataka and Dwyer. There are also younger blokes in the 20s and State Cup who can be called upon. However these blokes can't be expected to replace Galea, Payne and Halatau like that. They will have theirs ups and downs, will struggle for consistency and have just plain poor performances. Some injuries and these blokes will be starting. Depth is deffinately an issue in the forwards.

What???

Sarcasm lost on you…..

We don't do Props.....no need...Folksie's here....Keith will play all season.....

Just need a bit of depth in the front row IMO. We all know Galloway as no trouble going forward and Gibbs finally picked his go forward up this year too, but behind them, Payten is not a metre-eater and Skando is no guarantee for next year, although with Laurie likely to be released, he could throw the boots on again. The Fifita brothers look strong in the Toyota Cup but Folksey will have to flog these boys to get them fit enough to handle playing front row in FG. They might be ready to come off the bench mid-season.

our forward pack shuld look like this;

8\. Galloway
9\. Farah
10\. bring andrew fifita out of NYC for sure!
11\. Ellis
12\. Heigno
13\. Galea.

that's pretty much what i reckon, just as long as we stop experimenting, and stick with the same team!

Anyone who saw Al Schirnack play yesterday knows why he will cement a NRL spot next season.

For those that missed it watch the replay at 5:30pm Wednesday Fox Sports 2

Al Schirnack was incredible yesterday. Was like a raging bull when he took the ball up. He certainly is ready for NRL. The whole pack of forwards for BRET are inexperienced but worked their butts off yesterday. They never gave up just kept pounding Central Coast. A young pack who should be very proud of what they've achieved. They never gave up. Well done to coach Fletcher. He's done a great job!! HOpefully we can go a step further next week 😛ray:

How did Mataka go Smeg? I'll be interested to see if he can make it into the top 17 regularly next season.

The combination of Schirnack and Willie Mataka was just too much as they belted their way up the field often with 2 or 3 Storm players hanging off their backs.

By the sounds of it both Big Al and Willie stepped up…......

Have you seen anything official .......Re Maraka's contract situation.....pretty sure he's signed up ......shame to lose him......

I am pretty sure he was signed up around the time he played a stint of games in FG this season.

Just watched a replay of the game and thought Shirnack was brillant. There were a number of times where Shirnack and Mataka took consecutive hit-ups on the left hand side and made huge metres. Both would be handy coming off the bench in the first grade if they can continue the form they showed on the weekend.
