WESTS TIGERS HELP KIDS TO READ AT EXODUS FOUNDATION

**Wests Tigers prop Jason Cayless recently inspired a group of students to develop their reading skills through a visit to The Exodus Foundation Tutorial Centre in Ashfield.**

**Cayless attended the first day of term last wee**k for the 32 children enrolled in this semester’s program.

The children are identified by local schools as having fallen behind in reading, with some of the children falling as far as 3 years behind.
>
The kids are taken in by the Exodus Foundation for two terms of intensive reading to get them back up to the reading levels of their age equivalents.
>
Cayless talked to the children about the importance of reading and how being able to read is essential to getting a good job and having a fruitful life.
>
He hoped to inspire the kids to push through the barriers and develop themselves into good readers. With only 20 weeks of classes and with some kids up to 150 weeks behind in reading, the task is tough and a lot of work needs to be done.
>
“I spoke to the children about how with perseverance even the impossible can be done and not to shy away from the hard work,’’ Cayless said.

“I gave examples of returning from season ending injuries early to let the kids know that anything is possible.”

As well as the Ashfield centre, Exodus Foundation has Tutorial Centres in Redfern, Gladstone, and Darwin catering for around 250 children each year.

Exodus Foundation International Operations Manager Michael Crews said the students really benefit from the program.
>
“Some of these children are at risk of falling out of the school system and out of home as well,’’ he said.
>
“The aim of the program is to bridge the literacy gap and enable the students to return to the mainstream education system within a 20-week period. The kids are picked up from their schools and brought to us where they undertake classes from 9am-12pm before returning to their schools for the afternoon.”

Wests Tigers supports Exodus Foundation as one of its Charity partners. NRL and NYC players will attend the Exodus Foundation to help students with reading in the tutorial centre, serve food in the Loaves and Fishes Restaurant and help with the Youth Mentoring program.

If you would like to help the Exodus Foundation, Wests Tigers is running a fundraiser where all you need to do is donate an old mobile phone. Five dollars will then go to the Exodus Foundation.
