Fullback Recruit

Great news if true.

Meaney or Anderson just further confirm how good Ivan Cleary as is talent identification.

One thing is obvious, we need a real fullback.

Have to say though that Meaney is a little ways from first grade, lots to work on. Most obviously strength and conditioning.

Anderson could jump straight in but Meaney would still be a class recruit.

I'd be a little more excited if it were Anderson.

The bloke Eddie is talking about is Nick Meaney - running fullback and leads the fitness runs at Newcastle and has played a lot of junior reps through the grades and is stuck behind Pnga forever in Newcastle so will be looking for an out. He is from the bush but nowhere near Newcastle so isn't a local junior for them as such

Could we get him this year?

Only if Newcastle release him….which I doubt..

He likely won't get a look in so it is a possibility.

Aren't Newcastle on the hunt for a prop?

Nathan Brown is a bit of a pretended, it wouldnt be that hard to get the better of a trade with him.

They're pretty thin on outside backs though and I don't imagine Meaney is too many injuries off a wing spot in first grade. It would be Denniss then him ahead of the crappy Mata'utia brothers. They'd be stupid to release him when they have cap space and are already down Moga for the season.

Nah if you waived a front rower in front of his face he would take it.

He is impetuous.

Didn’t Gamble play a bit of fullback at Redcliffe or the team before. I just can’t wait to see how he goes in first grade from the limited ISP I’ve seen from him.

I think Thompson deserves to be rewarded for his performances at this point and should be the #1 for the next few months, although I wouldn't rule out a mid-season transfer for either Meaney or Anderson. We've got money to spend and places to fill in our Top 30\. Will certainly be interesting to see how it all pans out.

Can't see us getting Anderson when it looks like Coote will leave the Cowgirls.
Be nice to get the young bloke from the Dragons for his speed alone.

I thought we had a young well credential guy who hasn’t played 1st grade, in our development squad …..l why would we need another one in that category of player. We need experience at the back.

Yep Dylan Smith

He's going alright in Flegg apparently. McIntrye is making the step up to ISP, as is Mikaele this week. Hopefully Smith gets his chance too.

Meaney looked a talented runner in ISP from the highlights, but Jai Field looked even better in his footage That kid can motor!.

Both are outstanding broken field runners but are they better than our own Dylan Smith? I guess they are ahead in their development, having played ISP.

Well they're both 2 years older, which is pretty significant at that age. Not many 18/19 year olds you can throw in first grade but plenty of 20/21 year olds you can.

I haven't heard of Meaney, what kind of characteristics does he have as a fullback?

He’s like Tedesco but skinnier, taller and can nail conversions.

Can he string two words together, and not sound like a goose?
