can someone please explain to me why if they plead not guilty and are then found guilty they are suspended for longer than if they just plead guilty

Because they go to the trouble of hiring a QC and arguing their case in front of the judiciary. It costs more money and takes more time, and as a result if they are found guilty they are hit with a heavier penalty.

It is the same with the legal system when people plead not guilty and go to trial. If they are found guilty they don't get a discount because it has taken more time and money and the Magistrates don't like that so they generally throw the book at them.
