Let's give it a rest. All this abuse of Benji is not doing ourselves or our club any good. It is now water under the bridge. Let's now concentrate on the future of our club and how it can be made competitive again.

Was a fan…now on the other side of fence.

His pride wil be his biggest downfall. I wish him the best but unfortunately I see him doing worse in Rugby. He won't come back and he's made his bed

Don't know if it's been brought up elsewhere, but Potter didn't take it too well either apparently. Reading an article on the League Live app, mentioning that in an interview with Sky Sports Radio when asked if he saw it as an up yours gesture, he said "Yeah I see it a little bit like that, but it's more in bad taste." Also quoted with "I wouldn't say it's naivety because I think Benji knows better."

There's hope for a dropping yet!

Potter gets shirty over Marshall video

Beleaguered Wests Tigers coach Mick Potter has slammed Benji Marshall for appearing in a video wearing an Auckland Blues shirt while still playing for the NRL club.

Marshall enraged Tigers supporters by announcing his signing with the Super Rugby outfit on the Blues' official website, wearing their jumper, just 24 hours after Friday's 26-22 loss to Parramatta - the last-placed Eels' first win in 10 attempts.

The 28-year-old former Kiwis skipper demanded a release from the final two years of his current deal in July after the club downgraded a contract extension from $1m a season to $700,000.

Potter, who's fighting to save his job after a disastrous first season in charge, agreed on Monday when asked if he thought Marshall's video appearance was an up-yours gesture to the Tigers.

"Yeah I see it a little bit like that but I think it's more just in bad taste," Potter told Sky Sports Radio.

"I wouldn't say it's naivety because I think Benji probably knows better."

Potter's decision to drop Marshall to the bench for a game against South Sydney earlier this year is believed to have effectively ended his relationship with his star player.

Two-time Dally M Medal winner Potter said the pair get on fine, but admitted the saga surrounding Marshall's future has affected the team.

"It's been distracting for the team, he's an influential player amongst his peers and I didn't want to let him go," he said.

"But he's made that decision to move on and I wish him all the best."

Marshall has struggled to recapture the brilliance of previous years but Potter accepted he must shoulder some of the blame for failing to get the best out of him.

"He's trying to make it work for him and that's part of my job to get that out of him," he said.

"I see that as a little bit of a failing within me that I'm not being able to get what Benji wants to do.

"I thought he had an improved performance on the weekend and it's no lack of effort from Benji and I'm really happy that he's trying his best."

Potter's position will be reviewed at the end of the season but he pleaded with the Tigers board to show some patience and allow him to see out the second year of his contract.

"I think I haven't been here long enough," the 49-year-old said.

"With a couple of the circumstances that have arisen over the past six months I don't think that would be the right thing to do to say my tenure's finished.

"I think I'm doing a lot of good things behind the scenes and think there's some changes that need to be made."

Some manly fan rang 2SM tjis arvo….mentioned the interview with Potter/Slats this morning on 2KY (I didnt hear it)
Said Slats was very aggressive, going over the same old stuff, benji/potter...benji/farah...seemed to be sticking up for benji
Wonder why? :unamused:

Slats is a braindead, single-minded circle-jerker who would think Benji deserves a spot based on his '05 form.

I STILL don't understand this. At all. A criticism of his form, yes. That's warranted. But an all out attack because he wore a jersey of a different colour (not even a rival jersey for that matter). People are saying they loathe him now, they want to see him fail. How horrible! I don't want to see anyone fail at all! People have very little empathy when it comes to footballers. One minor slip up (and lets face it, if was minor, it's not like he kicked you in the nuts then spat on your face) and all of a sudden he's the Judas of the Wests Tigers. Give me a break, this is the only part of Benji's recent escapades that can genuinely be criticized and I don't think it's that big. The whole "missed the captains run, sat away from other on plane" thing was probably well known by the entirety of the team. They were probably happy for him. The only people who are angry are those who have become so venomous in regards to a man many once saw as a tigers hero and legend that they attack his every move.

I think everyone needs to take a step back, then a deep breath, realise it's not the end of the world, that Benji is a human and humans make mistakes. They don't exist to make you happy, they exist for themselves. If Benji decided to wear that Jersey to embrace his new home, you might've been upset by it but he did not personally attack you. He has never meant to hurt the fans - he's made it perfectly clear he cares a lot about us. This is a human being we're talking about. I think people forget that. Abuse isn't going to get him anywhere, and when he's obviously in a time of trouble, it's probably going to be detrimental.

So please, lay off the hate for a while? It's getting stale as well….

He wil regret the way he finished here. I think he has been poorly advised. Too many backslappers. To see so many loyal Tigers fans turn against him in a way is shocking. However you can't say it isin't warranted. It's just been a horrible end for Benji, he should have gone out a better way. However with just a month left, the tde of public opinion is well and truly against him. He gave 11 years to the club, so people I think will still respect him, however its probably diminishing (diminished?)

I can kinda understand people being upset about the last month. But acting as if it erased the past 11 years is ridiculous. His public perception is diminished greatly and it's because people are acting like he personally singled them out to attack them when in reality he just did a bad publicity thingy.

The fact of the matter is that we can sit here and praise Benji for the good he has done, we're not forgetting that. But by the same token he has let himself down in the past 6 weeks or. The video on Saturday was the final straw for many. I just thought given the circumstances of how it had played out to that point, to then go and do what he did on Saturday was highly questionable. Consider the fact too that he knew the circumstances, he knew full well what he was doing. As Potter said, it basically an "up yours" to the club.

I can understand that many people feel let down by the video, but for me it was the first straw, & I have yet to see a legitimate justification for the other straws. Look, I have tried convincing people that hating him is wrong. It doesn't work, I accept that. You don't have to like him. But the way many people are acting its as if he's personally attacked them and its getting too harsh, too personal. He hasn't physically hurt any of us, or singled us out to emotionally hurt us. And as such, these responses are unwarranted. Hate him of you please, I won't agree with you but that's your decision. But the violent and angry responses are uncalled for. And I do appreciate, tigerpete, that you are being very level headed and diplomatic about the situation. In a large group of people being basically led by emotion, I applaud you for standing up with logic to justify yourself. As for the it being an "up yours" to the club, I still just think he was misinformed as to what it's reaction would be. I don't think he harbors any negative feelings towards the club or its fans, and, for my part, he hasn't ever given an indication of that. I do wish he's apologise though, just to clear things up with the fans because I'd be incredibly upset to see him go on such a low note (though, if he did apologise he'd probably get attacked for talking to the media too much…)

I basically agree. I still don't understand the extremity of the anger being directed at Benji by Wests tigers fans. This man was our hero just two years ago, and his form hasn't been that bad since.

I also think that the jumper thing is utter trivia. In Europren soccer as soon as a big player signs for a new club the first thing they do is parade him around in the club's jersey. In 2004 (?) Steve Price continued as captain of the dogs and won the premiership even tho he had long signed to go to the Warriors.

I also note that Potter said that Benji was trying hard and played ok against Parra.

Time to get over it everyone , it has happened and whether you are Pro Benji or Anti Benji nothing know can change what has happened

(Unless the Tigers haven't granted his release )…...........

Fall out of bed this morning sweetie did we or maybe the box of fruit loops were empty

I've always been a huge Benji fan, but the Blues announcement issue has had little impact on me, which says a lot for how much Benji has lost my support.

I don't hate the guy, I understand his motives. But I think he had a fair offer and he chose not to take it, so anything else he does from now on doesn't really affect me.

It reminds me of the Tim Brasher affair - everyone was thankful for what he'd done, but in the end he did move on and align with another faction. That takes the gloss of any memory I may have.

I was at the Warriors game at LO and they had a little chat with Benji, his last game. Some people hung about, had signs to say thanks. But to be quite honest I couldn't stomach hanging around, I trudged out of the ground with most everyone else.

To put things in perspective, I hung around for ages after the end of Wayne Pearce's final game, so too with other Tigers legends like Siro, Skando, Daz Senter.
