Gallop pushing for Campbelltown Stadium upgrade

i was reading bout this is the telgraph today
think it would be an awesome idea
we will finally have a place to call home instead of playing at mixed venues which is so frusturating such as the SFS
if it was to go ahead id have the blockbusters at campbelltown for e.g tigers vs eels
and traditional games played at leichardt for e.g tigers v roosters
although i love the heritage game played between the tigers and souths at the SCG and i think that thats where it should stay

This is a must.
Many on here say this must happen or that must happen.
This, imo…secures our future, these chances dont come by everyday...this MUST happen.

I don't agree Magpiecol. To neglect the inner west would be extremely stupid and very poor business sense. Yes, the future lies in South West (Blind Freddy can see that) due to increasing population of the region and the ever growing and prospering junior nursery of the Western Suburbs District, but having the bonus and benefit of the junior nursery of the inner west is still a significant reason why Rugby League still needs to have a presence in the inner west of Sydney, not to mention the historical link and emotional attachment to the Balmain Football Club. Leichhardt Home Games are events. Regardless whether its 4 or 3 games in the long term future, you can guarantee that the old girl will be full to the brim. Nostalgia is hard to come by for Rugby League fans, this is one of the last places that still provides that. Wests Tigers and the Game of Rugby League can ill-afford to lose it.

Couldn't agree more. And, don't forget there are still a lot of old magpie fans like myself from the inner west. Wests played out of Pratten Park at Ashfield for 60 odd years. For some of us, Ashfield is home - and Leichhardt Oval just up the road.

That said, a 40,000 capacity stadium at Campbelltown would be awesome.

I would dearly love to see this happen but I'm not going to hold my breath…

I'm with Ink ….... this is an absolute MUST.
Rather than spending a bit here and a bit there ......... why not do the job properly once and for all.

I would think the new venue would host that the SFS is now doing for WT? There should still be a good amount of games at LO but I wouldn't think it would be an even split…

What would be the situation in regards to tenancy agreements if this proposal were to be successful?

Would we have to pay more to rent the ground than we do now? If so how much more is it likely to cost us?

Alternatively will the stadium pay teams to play out of the venue so as to utilise it ala ANZ Stadium?

I assume that the proposed stadium will also be home to the 2nd Sydney franchise in the A-league - and therefore may be hard to get them to budge from the 'Blacktwon sporting precinct'.

Liverpool would be a decent compromise from the Govt's point of view with possibly the Tigers and Dogs? as co-winter tennants and it is a soccer heartland with the Marconi breeding ground nearby. I shudder the thought of sharing with the Dogs though.

It will only get built if Aus wins the rights to the 2022 World Cup and I doubt that will happen anyway.

I'll be happy with a new Western Grandstand at the current venue and a boost in capacity to 25,000-30,000

going away from Leichhardt, geeze some people on this forum are a joke,
By 2020 Leichhardt will probably have a brand new stand

I will start this off by saying that I live in the west.

The main danger with laying a lot of our eggs in the Campbelltown region is recruitment. If we are honest we do need to recruit from outside out junior district and with that said, there are many more attractive areas to live for a young person earning a lot of money…are players joinging souths, roosters, conulla cause they honestly think they are going to win a premiership..or is it the total opportunity (ie. lifestyle, where they live etc etc)

Teams such as penrith, canberra etc have always struggled to recruit big names...as has wests tigers...is it because of our success..?? partially but it also has to do with where players live and socialise...its the chicken or the egg scenario...can't get the players cause they want to live in nice place near the coast so you don't win games, you don't win games you don't get players also....

food for thought...and to reiterate, i live in the west...not sure i would if i earned 350K / year though...haha

you're talking stands - we're talking stadiums. :deadhorse:

so your sayin you would rather be watching football at a stadium like SFS every week which no atmosphere , then at a suburban ground like Leichhardt or Cambletown with a hell of a lot of atmosphere

:deadhorse: :deadhorse: :deadhorse:

What are you basing that 2020 prediction on?

It's Leichhardt for starters… Decrepit is a harsh word to describe it and be realistic - they couldn't even get the latte sippers around there (I used to live in Leichhardt but I drank flat whites) to agree to a (relatively) minor development in a mental hospital hardly used by anyone. They'd have slightly less than Buckley's of getting this passed.

In any case you'd have a massive chunk of irate supporters if you stopped playing there.

The Weststigers are an evolving spieces in 10/15 yrs all games will be played at Campbelltown or a similar venue..unfortunatly the inner west will become so green that hardly any development will take place..and the younger demographic won,t know who the magpies were or balmain these entities are gone the new brand is Weststigers .The population growth in the south west region in 10/15 yrs is gowing to be huge..like it or not this area has to be tapped and only fools wouldn,t you can argue as much as you like but thats the future!

At the end of the day it will always be a joint venture and Balmain Football Club will be a 50% stakeholder. You can talk about evolving and what people might think all you like but that's the reality and as a Balmain Football Club member I'd oppose any of our directors agreeing to play all our home games so far from our base. Campbelltown is okay if you live in the South-West but its the boondocks for everyone else and the club has a hell of a lot of fans from areas other than the Macarthur district.
