Gareth Ellis:'we’ve got a chance of beating anybody'

Wests Tigers second-rower Gareth Ellis says opposition teams will be looking over their shoulder in the race to the finals providing his team-mates can address their defensive issues.

The team may have scored 51 points in the win over Parramatta at Campbelltown on Monday night but it was the 26 points they conceded that disappointed Wests Tigers Head Coach Tim Sheens.

“We’ve got some work to do there to be serious against the four sides we’ve got to play. We needed to at least stick our hand up,’’ Sheens said post match.

Ellis said his team-mates know what they can are capable of providing their attitude in defence improves.

“It’s just a matter of tightening our defence up and everyone says it and we know it as players,’’ Ellis said.

“When we’re on defensively, we’ve got a chance of beating anybody and I think that’s the key to our success over the next few weeks.”

The eighth-place Wests Tigers will get a strong indication of where their defence is at when they take on the 12th placed St George-Illawarra Dragons at Allianz Stadium this Saturday night.

For Ellis, it will be his fourth game back after suffering a foot injury against Souths in round 5\. Like his team, he is trying to play himself into form.

“I’ve been out for so long. Every game is hard work,’’ he said

“I’m just battling away and trying to get the fitness levels up. Hopefully that will click but it was still a very scratchy game (against Parramatta) particularly early on as the score line reflected.

“It was nice to get the points and run away with it in the end to give ourselves a bit of confidence.”

I hope Gareth has decided to make the most of his final games with the Wests Tigers by going out each of the remaining weeks and giving his all.

Yep, he's looked a little run off his feet at times since his return but his effort has been great. He's right too. If we defend well there's not many sides that will or should beat us. Defense remains our downfall and until we show consistency we're gonna struggle. Thankfully in the case of the Dragons this week, their attack is hardly potent but if we gift them ball down our end through missed tackles…..well, we'll pay. The second half defense was better on monday night but you can't blame any of us for not feeling convinced about it still.

A lot of people are saying our second half defence was better

Parra didn't have the ball in the second half and when they did they turned it over

He still looks short of a gallop and hopefully we can limp into the finals so he can make the most of his time left here. I'm hoping it won't take too much longer to return from such a lay off but you never know.

I do agree though, tighten up our defense and we'll go a long way to beating anybody. I will be more receptive of a defensive, ground out 12-6 win this weekend over another 51-26 touch footy fest. It would be nice to put 50 points on the Dragons, but that's not what finals footy requires.

Hate to think what would of happened if they got the ball!

We need at least 50-60% of the ball to even have a chance IMO. When the other mob have the ball my blood preasure & pulse rate go through the roof!
