Wests Tigers second-rower Gareth Ellis says opposition teams will be looking over their shoulder in the race to the finals providing his team-mates can address their defensive issues.
The team may have scored 51 points in the win over Parramatta at Campbelltown on Monday night but it was the 26 points they conceded that disappointed Wests Tigers Head Coach Tim Sheens.
“We’ve got some work to do there to be serious against the four sides we’ve got to play. We needed to at least stick our hand up,’’ Sheens said post match.
Ellis said his team-mates know what they can are capable of providing their attitude in defence improves.
“It’s just a matter of tightening our defence up and everyone says it and we know it as players,’’ Ellis said.
“When we’re on defensively, we’ve got a chance of beating anybody and I think that’s the key to our success over the next few weeks.”
The eighth-place Wests Tigers will get a strong indication of where their defence is at when they take on the 12th placed St George-Illawarra Dragons at Allianz Stadium this Saturday night.
For Ellis, it will be his fourth game back after suffering a foot injury against Souths in round 5\. Like his team, he is trying to play himself into form.
“I’ve been out for so long. Every game is hard work,’’ he said
“I’m just battling away and trying to get the fitness levels up. Hopefully that will click but it was still a very scratchy game (against Parramatta) particularly early on as the score line reflected.
“It was nice to get the points and run away with it in the end to give ourselves a bit of confidence.”
