This makes a controversial medical retirement and following Salary Cap compensation look ridiculous. Surely you can't come out of retirement after a career ending injury.

Edit: not sure what to make of this.

He is allowed to retire and forfeit money. However if Souths had even $1 of that retirement wiped from their cap, it's a rort. For example if he got paid for his coaching role and they wipe that off the cap (I am not clear if NRL did or did not) then it's a mad rort.

He wasn’t medically retired and his salary last year was applied to the salary cap. The rort is it freed up 800k in their cap and allowed them to purchase arrow and Latrell.

Precedent set that you can now retire and the money goes out of the cap.

NRL, nothing's changed. Different strokes for different folks. Wonder if V'landys has anything to say on this? Does he comment, or does he say nothing.

Inglis was never medically retired,,

Souff's sought Cap relief by offering him a job in lieu getting Unca Wayne's coffee's which was granted by the NRL for this season..his salary was not included in the salary cap..

I am struggling to understand how that is any different from R Farah. Set up a new off-field job as an ongoing mechanism to defract the total cost of the agreement, whereby the initial hit is included in the cap but the final monies were not.

If I'm not mistaken, the intent was that Inglis would earn the remaining $1.5M of his contract via 5 years in an ambassador-coaching role with Souths, $300K p.a. I read an article by Bulldog Ritchie about it. Souths were able to have the 2020 onwards costs removed from their cap, with the 2019 payments (player and coach) included.

Which then means you can retire any player, even not needing to seek medical clearance, take a one-time cap hit (that you've probably already half-paid by March anyway), give them an ongoing role to funnel the remaining monies into, then they can return to the sport if they choose in the following season or after.

You would have to ask Todd..

It was how they were able to fit Latrell Mitchell into their cap for this season..

Hopefully Warrington announce the signing of Prodigy Chris Mcqueen Next !!

Seems legit🙄
Fair dinkum, you couldn't make this farce up if you tried. Hollywood should offer to make a film about the gross mismanagement, blatant favouritism and just plain all-round astonishing unbelievability of events that have happened in and around the NRL in the last 10 or so years.
People who haven't been privvy to the embarrassment our game heaps on itself would find this mountain of ineptness hard to believe as being true.
Farce. All you can do is shake your head.

He can take Cody Walker with him

Nah, I want Souths to be stuck with him and his troubles.
Funny thing is that Souths purchased Latrell with GI's rort-money.....he's working out well for them😂

South Sydney have inadvertently exposed a potential salary cap loophole in the wake of Greg Inglis’ retirement.
On Monday, Inglis announced he’d be hanging up the boots immediately after an injury-dogged start to the 2019 season despite having 18 months left on his contract.

Live stream the 2019 NRL Telstra Premiership on KAYO SPORTS. Every game of every round live & anytime on your TV or favourite device. Get your 14 day free trial >

The value of the remainder of his contact is $1.5 million which Inglis will reportedly sacrifice so as not to disadvantage the Rabbitohs’ going forward.

Fairfax is reporting the NRL will notify the Rabbitohs by the end of the month whether it will grant them salary cap dispensation after declaring Inglis medically fit to play on.

Inglis will now move into roles with both the Rabbitohs and NRL which will involve coaching, mentorship, ambassadorships and community.

“He was only able to retire because Souths offered him a job, a good job, said to be $300,000 a season,” The Daily Telegraph’s Phil Rothfield told NRL 360 on Fox League.

“The NRL are talking about topping that up and why wouldn’t they? He’s a great ambassador. I don’t care that he’s getting that money.

“What I do think is a problem, though, and I’ll use Darius Boyd as an example. He’s on $2.4 million for the next three years. He’s not broken but he’s struggling and he’s carrying injuries.

“What’s to stop Anthony Seibold and Paul White going to him at the end of this season saying ‘Souths did this, we’re going to give you a job with NRMA, you’re going to service our sponsors, you’re going to help ‘Seibs’ coach.

“Can all clubs do this now?”
