GROAT???

Dumbfounded by the amount of people that want to lay the boot into Groat.

You don't play Aussie Schoolboys, win MVP for the tournament, get selected for U20's Origin, etc, etc unless you are half decent.

Some people think that because he isn't 'explosive' with runs that bowl people over or because he doesn't knock people over with shoulder charges that he 'isn't any good' or 'doesn't impress'.

Anyone remember Bryce Gibbs? John Skandalis?

For the record - he should struggle to get his way into the side at the moment, there isn't room and there are players in better form. I just don't think Groat is as ordinary as many people make him out to be.

A lump of a human like Groat is always going to take a little time coming back from a leg issue - regardless of how minor it is.

He will be back in first grade before too long.

give the kid time. He'll come good soon enough!

He's only 19, not many 19 year old props set the world on fire. Hell, even Fifita and Woods are incredibly rare to be going so well at such a young age in the front row.

Give him time, he'll develop into a solid prop over time.

Please dont put fifita in the same class as woods

I didn't say they were equal, but you'd be stupid to argue that Fifita isn't a talented young prop.

I hope he is not in first grade. This year anyway. He has super issues with defense. Always seems to get out smarted.the team has been winning without him let's leave it that way.

I don't think anybody doubts that groat has a lot of potential and should become a very good first grader

However ATM he doesn't look ready for week to week first grade either physically, talent wise or mature wise. This was extremely evident in the warriors semi last year where fheir little quick men targetted him and made breaks at will through the middle. Sadly he doesnt seem to have improved this year. Cashmere, moors and bmm are all better options then him ATM.

When you think about the fact that woods came into first grade like a seasoned first grader has probably put unrealistic expectations on groat. Woods is just a freak and a one in a million, I've never seen a front rower adapt to first grade like he did, not roach, webcke etc. groat shouldn't be judged on woods success.

Groat will be a good player hes only 19 so just bring him along slowly, he was rushed due to injuries but he will develop into a good player, give him a break.

I dont understand the logic with bringing players back early from injury. Give him the right amount of time to get the injury right. He is only a young kid and we have been hardly struggling in his absence.

We should be looking at him as a long term project.

Sure he has credentials in his youth career, as for first grade we've seen nothing close to impressive. For a 19 year old prop to play FG they have to show something special, no thanks for this year Matt.

Do you think maybe he pushed to come back from injury a bit too soon thinking he might have a shot at breaking into first grade in the event woods/keith got selected for origin?

I like Groat, but to be honest the kid doesn't have much going on between his ears. The best front-rowers have at least some kind of intelligence.

Intelligent post

Ummm … like Blocker , Backo ,etc , etc
Do you guys actually know him ... or just making assumptions because he's a big lump of a kid?
For mine he got rushed because of injuries and could be used off the bench (like first intended).
Will note he seems to have gone off the boil since he got knocked unconscious against the Broncos and has some problems with defence - but ,after all ,he is still a baby when it comes to props.

Groat is only now about the same age as woods was when he debuted, and from memory woods wasn't starting games this early into his career. Fitness is something that's just gonna come from getting more game time and a few more off seasons under his belt, not something that's inherently wrong with him, it's up to Matt and whether he does his extras at training, and a bit of luck as to how quickly he progresses. Woods isn't perfect either and defense around the ruck is something that a lot of young guys r gonna struggle with. He is probably in the same place BMM was 12 months ago.

He is still so young , props peak late in their careers , so any googled performances at this early stage are great
