Hastings lock

Hastings at lock did not work. He had a good game, but we had too many voices out there.

Brooks at halfback does not work. We know this. His confidence is totally shot. He looks scared to make a mistake as he knows people will hound his errors. Time for a stint in reserve grade.

Douiehi is a great player but he is seriously lacking in a number of important departments required for a half. He can't organise a backline move. The men outside him get zero ball - it's like a black hole became a rugby league player. His long kicking leaves a little to be desired. All of his best moments today were things he could have done while playing centre.

The whole attack has been a mess for some time, but has been noticeably worse under Noddy.
We are so poorly coached and the conditioning of the players is even worse. Throw in the lack of talent/experience in the squad and you end up with the mess that we're watching week to week.
I have no idea how 2023 is going to go, but it can't be worse than this horrific purgatory that we're currently in.

I actually don't hate the idea. But as others have said, the problem is that Hastings is the most ball dominant out of our halves and he's the best player out of them. Doueihi is a good ball runner and although his ball playing was non existent today, I also think that's partially due to have no chemistry whatsoever with the guys outside him. He put plenty of tries on last year so give it time.

Brooks obviously isn't remotely close to first grade standard. So you end up having having Hastings accommodating a complete passenger and doing the role of two. We're better off with the extra go forward and control in the ruck with a big guy in the middle and having Hastings play in the halves. If we had two genuinely good halves available AND Hastings, then Hastings at 13 could be really good. Like how Brandon Smith can work for the Storm with Munster and Hughes either side of him.
 
Douehi 6, Hastings 7, Nu 9, Brooks 14 - comes on to replace Nu after 25 mins, with two tasks: pass the ball and use his speed to make quick darts out of dummy half. Don’t kick, don’t do anything on the last tackle, in fact, just don’t think!
If we had a forward pack with punch this could work. Joffa to 13 please.

Nu needs to play off the ruck (anywhere 11,12, 13, 6, 7) much more effective with a bit of space.
 
Oh and a halves combo of AD and Hastings would be even worse than what we're currently dishing out IMO. No pace or any sort of agility there.

It's a weird one, both have some good strenghts for sure, but I just don't know what their best positions are.

Hastings I'm inclined to say his best position is 7, but AD I just can't pick it for him - don't see him as a half, probably centre but defensively weak there. If he puts his mind to it and doesn't sook about not playing 6, he really could make a good lock.
 
I like it.
Sure it sometimes pushes our 6 another pass wider but with Doueihi at 6 it should compliment his game.
OK, it looked a little clunky, but gametime can give it more harmonic motion.
The other important tinker to make it work better would be a couple of heavy hitters with high work rate in our forward pack.

I think the club tanked and Brooks stopped fighting against it. The club has developed a skill for demotivating it’s players, which also makes it difficult to recruit and develop juniors.
If Benji can have some influence on Brooks it could have significant impact on the team’s performance?
 
Have to disagree & agree with a lot that has been said. As stated in the first post, we have 2 5/8s running. I have seen in the past where a talented ballplaying lock has played like a 5/8 (eg Jim Dymock) but i cant remember a lock playing like a halfback. I think that is thinking outside the box & worth persisting with. Hastings was still doing what he does best(organising) and played pretty much a 7 role with a few hitups. I take the point we lose a "fulltime" forward in this arrangement, however I think when the bugs are ironed out we will find the extra attack will more than make up for this. Have both wingers & even one centre take an extra ruck up when we are pushing out of our end, but start play a bit of footy outside our 40. Also , while I agree Douhie needs to pass the ball more, we have to remember he has only just come back from injury.
I agree our go forward has been missing all year, so it is very easy to blame Brooks & Hastings . But seriously are they supposed to have to ruck it up as well as make the plays? With this new arrangement, I believe it will encourage us to play a bit of footy, just like the old days when The Tigs were well known for it.

Joffa back to lock , plays his best footy there
