EXCLUSIVE: Andrew Johns and Brad Fittler back Jackson Hastings to shine with Wests Tigers
By Chris De Silva

League legend Andrew Johns has described Jackson Hastings as a "really good" individual, backing him to be a positive addition to the Wests Tigers squad.

After a three-year exile away from the NRL in the UK Super League, Hastings signed a two-year deal to return to Australia for the Wests Tigers.

Hastings left the NRL under controversial circumstances back in 2018, released from his contract with Manly after a falling out with skipper Daly Cherry-Evans and coach Trent Barrett.

Despite his acrimonious NRL exit, Johns recalled his positive experiences while working alongside Hastings when he was a teenager with the Roosters between 2014 and 2016.

"I found him to be a really good young guy," he told Wide World of Sports' Freddy and the Eighth.

"I remember when I'd go to training, I'd sometimes take my
little fella and he'd kick the footy around with him.

"He was very young coming in when he was at the Roosters and he was playing with some real strong and dominant players.

"He's gone away and obviously matured. You're a different person when you're in your mid-20s to when you're in your late teens, so I think he'll go well."

Fellow league great Brad Fittler also praised the Hastings signing, suggesting the halfback would give the Wests Tigers more of an on-field identity than they've had with Luke Brooks on the controls.

"What he will do is he'll voice up. He'll own where they are and where they've got to go on the field and he does that easy," Fittler told Freddy and the Eighth.
"You can tell he's a real student of the game. He knows when to kick, all that sort of stuff, which Brooks falls in and out of a lot.

"It might give them a bit more consistency in what they're doing during a game. Sometimes at the end of the game, you'll watch the Tigers and go, 'What happened? What have they done?', it's very hard to know.

"When he plays, you become more aware of what he's trying to do."

On Friday afternoon on SEN with his brother and Webster, A Johns said he didnt see where Jackson fits in at the Tigers and it looks like the kind of signing you do when you dont know what to do and you have to do "something".

They have a plan and that plan would of been discussed with Hastings himself as part of the reason he signed on. Our recruitment team have been excellent and have not over paid players or just brought players for the fun of it.. I will Trust the process. If we can just gets some wins together it will settle the mad media we are getting. Starts tomorrow

He had definitely matured. He was loved at Salford and Wigan by the fans and teammates.

I think people will be very happy with the signing. In a market where Chad Townsend is 800 and Moses is talked of at a million...Hastings will surprise people.

Hastings is a very good signing. Clever hands, strong runner, loads of confidence and tough.
Bring him over to Australia now ??

Anyone think Madge might be looking at moving Douehi to the centres, Brooks to 6 with Hastings at 7 in 2022, especially if we don't keep Joey Leilua and/or Roberts beyond this season?

Yes

Too bad our first grade results are the same

My feeling would be more along the lines of Doueihi stays at 6, Brooks to start 2022 at 7 (it’s is his to lose) Hastings to start the new year at 14 after Mbye departs. If the results aren’t there in early rounds, Brooks to 14 and Hastings to 7.

Yep, its good recruitment by the club (as long as Hastings is the 17) .
Mbye has been good as a 14. Hastings as the potential to be better (and cheaper).

He sure could and it will lead to an even stronger team.

No. Doueihi has done well at 6. I like the look of Ogden at centre and we have other young talent coming through in the centre position.

I don't think it matters what No is on his back, he hasn't come here to play reserve grade, do you not think the club is thinking similar. Plenty of careers at stake on this?

I agree Hastings is cheaper but there is no way imo he is better than Mbye. Mbye is also more versatile able to cover fullback, centre, halves, lock and hooker. Hastings halves, lock maybe and hooker. Hastings is as slow as a wet week and doesn't have the pace to cover centre or fullback.

Apart from the game management skills his Super League coach Adrian Lam says he has in spades, the guy is also, reputedly, a good goal kicker, something we've lacked for a while now. Must help us win some of those close ones.

I know it's Super League, but Hastings had key 3 moments in this match. 2 led to tries and he made a try saver. In a tight match, his involvements made all the difference.

This guy is going to be a star for us. That one chip kick to the corner is something Brooks hasn’t been able to master in over 150 games.

Hastings wont have 45mins to kick it in the NRL.
