Have teams worked us out?

We are starting to leak points again with 30 + in three of the last 4 outings.

No coincidence the teams that achieved this. Raiders, Roosters, Warriors. All teams with pace and power. Teams that can off load, spread the ball and play up tempo.

The modern game is about the grind, but the team that can play with some real aggression with power and pace. Roosters and Raiders were not afraid to play plenty of football early in there sets to our edges. They knew even if we didn't miss the tackles we would be on the back foot. I think the Knights will continue on this trend next week by spreading early and encouraging off loads.

Bottom line is we just don't think we have the ability to go with these sorts of sides. In general our backline from 1 -7 is small, undersized and slowish outside of Teddy and Simona. Then in the back - row we don't have aggressive defenders or ball runners that can off load or create some second phase. If they do Taylor is not interested in this style of play.

The Media are very lazy with their reporting that this side will win premierships, and the kids will be superstars. Everyone seems to think it is just going to happen. Well we have barely had 1 injury this year and we still cant even win half our games. I think we need to recruit and we need to try and recruit some size and speed in the backline or some real aggression up front.

Teams have worked us out, they are scoring the points when Marty, Woods and Galloway are off the park as that is when they can get some freedom in the middle to use the big men out wide as they get on top of us.

It's a constant trend ATM, bash us, wait then roll the dice when we make our interchanges and walk through us.

I think anybody who thinks WT will in the near future recruit at least one reasonable player is banging their head against a door. It's all hush hush from management but all indications are that the club has not much money to recruit players beyond the ability of Junior Burger. The question is can the club continue to live off potential?

we definitely struggle with that second phase play and spreading it wide more than other teams. pretty good observation. and i think teams have realised that to some extent.

but at least we can grind out wins like the parra game, very well. if we learn to handle that expansive power attack we can bring them back into a grind or simply just demolish them as they eventually get sloppy playing expansively. problem is we arent putting enough pressure on that kind of play so they have free will to go out the back.

knights will be looking to take advantage of that, if we're up to the challenge we can win convincingly as expansive play is higher risk than a bash and barge approach, but also higher reward if the team you do it against can't match you.

Let's actually have a look at each game individually and I'll try sum it up quickly from my memory

Round 1 vs Titans: Good grinding win by us, solid D at the end
Round 2 vs Dragons: Early attacking onslaught, grinding out a win. Dragons played mostly up the middle
Round 3 vs Souths: Grinded it out as best as possible but Souths better at it than us in ridiculous form.
Round 4 vs Dogs: Great D, grinding it for a while then laying on a few tries. Expansive play quickly decimates us.
Round 5 vs Eels: Grinded out a great win
Round 6 vs Warriors: Expansive play quickly puts us away, we try to grind it but can't comeback from that far back
Round 7 vs Raiders: Quickly put on some points, Raiders play a bit expansive but also up the middle with the wind at their back. Not much resilience either way.
Round 8 vs Bulldogs: Grind it out for as long as necessary then pile on the points as they tire.
Round 9 vs Roosters: Grind it out and they play expansively and crush us with some calls their way.

if that's too long to read fair enough.

in summary, we can grind it out to stay competitive then put on some points. If teams play expansively effectively we often can't handle it and let in a lot of points very quickly before getting back into the grind. By then it's too late.

So fixing up that defensive weakness will allow us to force teams either to make errors or play a lot tighter which is where we're more comfortable anyway.

is there potential then?

i dont know. once we have simona and nofoaluma back, i'd say so yes.

we need some lateral speed in our outside backs. richards, lawrence, hoeter don't really offer that. But simona and nofoaluma do. Taupau definitely does, so does sironen. When those guys come off and Lodge and Ava come on (who don't) we get destroyed out wide.

So the solution i guess, is to recruit an aggressive 2nd rower who can defend well out in the centres in the middle 40.

I agree with Eddie 100% any team willing to chance their hand and play a quick up tempo game usually comes up trumps against our mob and I suspect as the season rolls on it is only going to get harder for our team. The bottom line is we are short on a few big quality players and i am sure the club know this, the hard thing is to find these players and attract them to our club

Depends on how long you want to wait until maturity….

Or then again, over time a lot of investments have failed and cost the invester a big chunk if not all their money.....

Time will tell.............
