OMG.
Phil Gould always mentions how they need more ex-players as video refs and in the judiciary to get a footballer's perspective from it, then Voss came back on the Sunday Roast by saying that in Gibbs' case he had 3 ex-players at the judiciary and they gave him three weeks. He said if Gibbs got suspended for that, Hayne should too.
Gus also called for Robert Finch to step down. Good decision IMO. Maybe someone like Tim Mander should take the role. I always thought he was a fair level headed ref that was very under rated. I think Bill Harrigan is in the media too much and too much of a loud mouth to take the role seriously and make the changes needed. But the whole system definitely needs a massive shake up for 2010.
Yeh I agree, I think Finch needs to go, I dont know how long Finch has been involved with the refs but the last 5 or so years things have gotten out of hand.
The judiciary, the video ref, the ruck area, and the obstruction need a revamp.
For the judiciary I think suspensions are to harsh for some incidents and if they still want to punish players, then a fine would be a lot better. The player can still play, his team mates and the club dont get affected, the fans can still see their players, the league makes a little bit of money which could go to grass roots, and the player still gets a warning you could say. It would also help eliminate a precedent that gets set and we wouldnt have our stars missing crucial matches which hurts the club more (For example, for Gibbs he might get a $1500 fine but still play, and Hayne, he could get $2500 fine and still play the Grand Final).
Also cut out the carry-over points, once a player has served his punishment he should free from everything like everyone else.
For the video ref, I only want him to determine the grounding, and thats where more discretion needs to be applied, we all know that Dallas Johnson lost the ball and it shouldnt of been awarded but they went by the black and white rules and there was no discretion applied.
The ruck area, get rid of this "dominant", "surrender", telling players theyre offside, when to go, etc. The coaches should be coaching this, not the refs, the players should know when theyre offside, and when they have to clear the ruck area, if they dont, then penalise them, it'll make the job a lot less easier for the refs then, in fact, we probably wouldnt have a 2nd ref then and so we would also only the highest quality refs around then.
The obstruction, well I got no idea how it works now, it should be, you cant run behind your own player, and if a decoy takes out a player in the line and it has no bearing the overall play, then it should be play on, simple.
