Heighington downplays Tigers final surge

Wests Tigers lock Chris Heighington says his side has too much to play for to take anybody lightly in the lead-up to the NRL finals.

On paper the Tigers appear to have a dream run starting on Sunday with Parramatta, who are second last, followed by cellar dwellers Gold Coast and finally Cronulla (12th).

But Heighington has been around the game too long to look beyond the next game.

The Tigers are sixth on the ladder and just one win from the top four after their 32-18 victory over Penrith on Friday night.

'Every game is hard in the NRL, obviously we've got Parra this week and they beat us a couple of weeks back … we've got three more games and we're going to give it all we've got,' Heighington said.

'Obviously going into the finals in fourth position would be really good for us but we've just got to keep winning and worry about our own team.'

The Tigers are chasing their sixth consecutive victory and line up against the Eels who have lost their past five games.

Coincidentally, the Eels' last victory was against the Tigers, 22-6 in round 18.

'They are really dangerous, they've got an awesome forward pack and they've obviously got Jarryd Hayne in that team,' Heighington said.

Dual international Lote Tuqiri is confident he'll make his return from a quadricep injury.

Tuqiri has been out for nearly a month and was put through his paces in a training session at Concord Oval on Monday that included running up the stairs of NSW rugby's former showpiece stadium under the watchful eye of a Tigers conditioner.

Heighington was impressed: 'I had a chat to him earlier and he reckons he is a chance of playing. He was looking pretty quick out there.

'He'll probably do a bit more tomorrow and we'll see after that.'

Utility Mitch Brown, who is playing left centre in place of the injured the Chris Lawrence, has also covered for Tuqiri on the wing during the season and hopes he can be part of the Tigers' finals team when they are back to full strength.

Lawrence is expected to return from his hamstring injury for week one of the finals.

'It is tough, they're such great players ... it's been really hard for me to actually get a start this year,' Brown said.

'I'm hoping I can be in there somewhere when they come back for the semi-finals.

'We really want to get that top four spot. I don't think anyone wants to finish seventh or eighth and Melbourne or Manly.'

I agree with heighno…just because we are playing the cellar dwellers from here on in does not mean they will be easy games.

All 3 teams are realistic chances of getting the spoon and that is surely motivation enough for them to be giving their all for the remaining rounds.

If we take any of them lightly we will fall.

I hope they go into this game with the right attitude cause i think we went into the penrith game thinking we had it already won.
I agree with stryker, the Eels & the Titans will be motivated in not getting the spoon. If we are not switched on & our completions are not of a high standard were they should be at this stage of the season, the eels & the titans will beat us.
Its all about attitude in these last 3 rounds.

Yes we definitely switched off at certain stages against Penrith but our start was brilliant I thought
We really owned Penrith early on
But as previously said the best thing in our favour over the next two weeks is we lost to both Parra and Titans earlier this season
And payback will be forthcoming for these early season loses I think

Its a great feeling to hear the boys making such statements that they want to win every game to finish in the Top 4… Normally I'd wish they just dont make such comments, but with the Top 4 looking harder than 5th or 6th, its great to see if we can push on.

2 years running as a Top 4 team would be ideal as a Wests Tiger Supporter after such an up and down History.

C'mon Tigers.... Bash those Eels!!!

Would be fantastic Watto. IMO fifth place is realistic, but it would be great to secure a home final.

Another way to get a home final would be to meet Manly I think.

The boys will need to play better than the Panthers game to make sure they win the next 3 and have a chance at 4th spot. It was great to get the win against the Panthers but it was not the controlled semi-finals performance they gave against Manly and the Dragons. I think they got a sniff against the Panthers and sensed a big victory, deviated from the game plan and then couldn't quite execute. Their defence was also not as committed as the other games and what could have been 50-0 turned into 32-18\. I am sure none of this would have been lost on Sheens or the lads for that matter and I look forward to a more comprehensive performance this week and the next 2\. Overall a pretty good five weeks and the Tigers have destiny in their hands at the moment.

Hi guys, this is my first post on this forum. Parra have been playing better each week and put the scare into Manly. This is a bit of a danger game, lets hope we can nut out a good solid win rather than waiting for Marshall to pull something out of his ar5e. If Lote doesn't play expect the highballs to be raining on Utai all day. That guy is killing me at the moment. On another note how good it Fulton playing! Keep up the good work Yoda!
