HEIGHINGTON HAS EYES FIXED ON BLUES JUMPER

Chris Heighington has set the record straight. The only colours he wants to pull on outside of the Wests Tigers jumper in 2011 is that of the NSW Blues jersey.

Fresh from signing a new two year deal that ties him to Wests Tigers until the end of 2013, Heighington’s passion to wear that elusive Blues jersey is burning stronger than ever.

Whenever talk arises over the NSW back-row positions, Heighington’s name is mentioned. Yet, he keeps being overlooked despite playing consistent footy over the past three years.

The non-selection even led to discussion about Heighington representing England in the Four Nations, a decision that weighed heavily on his mind as his father hails from the mother country.

In the end, Heighington remained strong to his roots and is happy within himself, especially after the way England collapsed in the Four Nations.

“ I want to play State of Origin. It is the pinnacle of rugby league and I will do everything in my power next year to do that,’’ Heighington said.

“Playing for England was an opportunity that popped up and the media really enjoyed feeding off that. But I just couldn’t see myself going into camp with England.

"It (playing Origin), would have been in the back of my mind.

“In the end, I never really had to make a decision. England spoke to a couple of people who I am close to but it didn’t eventuate. I want to finish my career representing NSW and possibly Australia.

“There are plenty of good quality back-rowers who can play for NSW so it is going to be hard. As long as I am playing well and the team is going well, it will take care of itself.

“To make these big rep sides, you have to have two good seasons in a row. Hopefully I can start next year where I left off this season. I need to hit the ground running.”

Heighington is proud of the fact that when his new contract expires at the end of 2013, he would have racked up 11 years with the Wests Tigers after making his debut in 2003\. A ‘Tiger for Life’ perhaps?

“I’m very happy at Wests Tigers. I enjoy the club and the camaraderie amongst the players, so it feels like home,’’ he said.

Heighington said loyalty to coach Tim Sheens played a major part in extending his contract after the Australian coach ‘found him’ playing lower grades for North Sydney on the Central Coast in 2002.

“I owe a fair bit to Tim and to the club. Wests Tigers will always have first bite at keeping me,’’ he said, proudly.

“It is pretty crazy to be honest when I think about how long I have been here. It has gone so quick. Every year is clicking past.

“To now be going into my ninth season and to play over 150 games for Wests Tigers, I have to pinch myself at times.

"It’s not bad for a boy from Umina to be able to play more than 150 games for the one club. It is a great honour

The Great man has the backing of another great man who happens to be Aussie coach at the mo.

If he can make the blues squad, that green one may find its way into his hands just like it did for Chris and Robbie this year.

Well done heino.

Heighno should have played for the Blues this year. His form was superior to that of Creagh and O'Donnell and his stats proved it too. Fingers crossed for 2011 but it will take an almighty epiphany from the selectors to wake up and realise they've been choosing the wrong players for a number of years now.

One of the best back rowers I have ever seen play anywhere. An amazing guy with a work rate that can only be matched by Nathan Hindmarsh in modern NRL history.

Apparently Chris used to live a couple doors down to where I am just moved to. Small world!!

Well I wish him the best but I'll believe it when I see it. My faith with the NSW selectors is only slightly better than my faith with the Australian cricket selectors…

even though the cricket selectors have hit the panic button at least the cricket captain actually starts and finishes the game ! the morons, goose daley & no idea bellamy disguised as nsw soo selectors are hopefully gone for good. who knows maybe tricky ricky might look favourably on heino, chris l and farah and they might get their just rewards. they certainly deserve to play soo.

One of the top 5 of worlds best second rowers. he should have already been playing origin. seletion is a farce. can ricky stuart see the light?

He deserves a spot there is no doubting that.

hopefully the changes that have taken place at the selector and coaching levels for NSW will assist in heighno getting a much deserved call up to the Blues.

unfortunately i dont think he'll get picked coz hes behind gallen, lewis, bird and watmough, although with a good start to the year he may be able to get in over choc

Shame Tim can't be coach of the NSW as well …....... travesty of justice how Chris hasn't been picked in the past.
He's better than all those blokes mentioned above.

It would be great to see Chris get a Blue Jumper, but I really cant see it happening. NSW have a glut of Backrowers and put simply, the backrow isnt where there problem lies… Hopefully some those ahead of him get injuries and he gets a run?!

The key to beating Queensland should start with them playing two Hookers and 4 Props, leaving only 1 backrow or back spot on the bench.

yeah agree they should definately have four front rowers. not sure about 2 hookers though, i think they should have a utility that can cover a number of positions (eg gidley) in case of injuries, and if no injuries occur, then put them on at hooker. so my bench would be:
14\. Prop
15\. Prop
16\. 2nd rower - hopefully heighno
17\. Utility - Gidley

obviously i want farah at hooker over ennis

Ricky Stuart has a very healthy respect for coach Sheens. you never know if there is an injury to those perceived as being in front I think C-h has a big chance.

What? Heighington better than the best "decoy running" second rower in Rugby League…?
