HEIGHNO & WOODSY GO BACK TO SCHOOL

Wests Tigers NRL players Aaron Woods and Chris Heighington attended Exodus Foundation in Ashfield last week as part of the club’s support of the foundations Intensive reading program. The boys helped struggling young children with their reading to help motivate them to keep reading.

The boys sat one on one with the selected kids for 15 minutes each and helped them out with any mistakes and difficulties they had with their reading. Wests Tigers players have been attending Exodus’ reading classes weekly during this current term. The players act as role models at the reading school whereby the kids are offered the chance to ‘Read with a Wests Tiger’ if they perform and behave well in class.

Aaron has been the main driver of the program attending every session. During this time he has got to know a few of the kids and has seen firsthand how well the program is run.

‘It’s amazing to see the improvement in reading of some of these kids in such a short time’ Aaron commented. ‘It really shows that the program is working and it’s amazing to see the kid’s confidence grow as they get better at reading’.

Afterwards Chris and Aaron talked to the kids about working hard to achieve their goals and not giving up on the final outcome. They then handed out tickets to last weekend’s Wests Tigers v Melbourne Storm game at Leichhardt Oval to two lucky students who won the raffle. The tickets were donated as part of Wests Tigers Members Give back scheme.

Other Wests Tigers players besides Aaron and Chris who have attended Exodus Foundation intensive reading centre during this term include Tame Tupou, Junior Roqica, Jason Cayless, John Skandalis and Matt Hyland.

Wests Tigers have adopted Exodus Foundation as its major charity partner for 2010 and are looking to extend its relationship into 2011 and beyond.

Its a great thing to see our club getting involved in a charity like Exodus. When you spend some time with people less fortunate than oneself, you realise the problems you have pale into insignificance compared to what others go through.
Good on you fellas for putting something back.
