Hooker situation

I don't know alot about Jake Simpkin, does anyone know what attributes he possesses that people have big wraps on him for?

If I had to compare him to someone from the small clips I've seen him play he's like a bigger version of Harry Grant. Not saying he will reach the same heights in one season but his style of play reminds me of grants.

Quick scoots out of dummy half, dangerous close to the line etc. Plus he can put a hit on

These were of course only clips from u18s / QLD cup matches but he looks the goods

The spine is where we’re going to be let down this year. Bottom 5.

They could come good but you wouldn't bet on it.

Sounds like we dodged a bullet with McInnes ...did his ACL at training ..season probably gone

Wow

Just wow.
yep I would have signed McInnes 100% if available before this.
Imagine now McInnes will be more "lock" then Hooker but that will suit the Sharks fine. Poor Dragons, looks like the Spoon is yours.

We don't have a guaranteed proven 80 hooker but we have 2 with good potential. Fingers crossed!

If we signed Mcinnes he probably wouldn't have done his ACL, he wouldn't have been training on that field with those players. Haha just sayin. Bad luck.

Liddle will play 80 minutes.
Liddle will dominate.
Liddle will push for Origin selection.
That is all.

first two points hope you are right
last point re Liddle and origin
no chance

I’d say the most likely situation will be start of the season Liddle starts at 9, Mbye at the 14 and Simpkin in reserve grade for a bit and then into the team by say round 7 or 8

More like, wow, look at that determination and not only from the guy who knows that he will have to excel to have a shot.

Just saw a clip of Jake Simpkin for Manly-Wynnum. Terrific leg drive, reminiscent of The Cheese, got the torso and leg thickness.
Wonder if he might transition to lock in the next 2yrs? I say 2yrs coz he's still young and developing physically.

Mate you are spot on.
With Liddle and Simpkin we really have a chance for a decent 1,2 punch. A lot like the storm have done for the past 15 years with Cameron Smith and whoever.
Eventually I see Liddle staying on the full 80 and just being used to tighten up the defence and ball play close to the line like Cameron Smith does for about 20 mins a game whilst the fresh The Cheese comes into the game and provides a bit of spark against tiring forwards.

Why would Mbye be in the 14 when he has been training in the 1 all off season....I hope your not pinning your hopes on a rookie to to play 1 with hardly any NRL experience ....

I think Liddle will have a standout year if he stays fit, which I think he will...Simpkin developing nicely and he and Liddle to share the hooker role by mid season onwards, just at a guess...

sidenote....Imagine our CC team with Laurie 1,Madden 7 and Simpkin 9...dynamite just there...

Simpkin thriving in top squad after Development year

Promoted from the development squad to the Top 30 this season, Wests Tigers young gun Jake Simpkin is living his childhood dream.

At the age of 19, Simpkin is still eligible to play in the Jersey Flegg competition for a couple of seasons, but his early career success has seen him rocket into Wests Tigers' top squad and competing for an NRL debut in 2021.

A highly-rated junior representative hooker, Simpkin has already tasted success in his short career, having helped Wynnum-Manly reach the Grand Final in the Hastings Deering Colts competition in 2019. He has also represented Queensland throughout the junior grades and featured in junior triumphs for the Maroons.

“I always been a footy fan — our whole household was — so to be now a part of an NRL team’s Top 30 squad is a dream come true,” Simpkin said.

“I enjoyed being in the Development squad and it was a great opportunity to train alongside so many great players. I learnt off people like Benji Marshall and Luke Brooks which I think really helped me get more out of those early years.

“At first it was a bit of a ‘wow’. I came in for my first season and saw all of the NRL players and then got the opportunity to train with them, day in, day out. It was pretty special and it was very humbling as well.

“Now moving into the top 30, I’ve got different goals and ambitions for the year ahead.”

The biggest of those goals: getting a game in the NRL.

“I’ve always dreamt of playing in the NRL. If I got that opportunity, I’d take it with both hands,” the young hooker said.

“It would mean so much to me if I got to make my debut but I know I need to remain patient and wait for the right opportunity.”

With an NRL contract in his hand, Simpkin understands there will be extra attention that comes with that – although he’s remaining grounded.

“I try not to read into it. I know I’ve got to let my training and my actions do the speaking,” he said.

“I know there’s going to be more media attention and that’s what comes with being a footy player, but I’ve got good people around me.

“I think back that played all the representative sides when I was growing up so I sort of know what it’s like to play in big games but the NRL is a much bigger step.”

With several key arrivals this year such as Daine Laurie, James Roberts, Joe Ofahengaue, James Tamou and Stefano Utoikamanu, Simpkin said he was excited to be part of a club heading in the right direction on and off the field.

“I think we’re in for a big year and we’ve got a big future ahead of us," he said.

“We’ve spoken about leaving no stone unturned and I think we can have a special year.”

While focused on making an impact on field, the talented young rake is also applying his trade off it with his time in the books.

“I’ve been studying sports exercise science for a while now part-time," he said.

"I've been doing it when I'm not at training and it's enjoyable.

"It's been good to get my mind away from footy [and] I think it's pretty important to have something else to focus on."

I think that’s always been the issue behind Liddel, is if his body can hold up, he’s s got the talent, otherwise he wouldn’t still be here.

But for me, it is his to lose, a bit like Mbye imo.

I think Liddle has shown he is the man for the job. He’s been really impressive in the trials and he looks really strong. I guess being out with a leg injury gave him the chance to hit the gym.

His defence impressed me. At one point yesterday, we were defending our goal line and he made 3 or 4 tackles in the one set, including 3 back to back. He then still had energy to get to dummy half when we got the ball back. Good signs.
