Hopefully a future prospect

Hi everyone,
I'm a long time reader of this forum and now a first time poster.
I don't really know what the go is with posting new threads and what topic to post them under but I'll give it a shot.
This year I played for Camden Rams under 18s with a long time friend Jake Dooner. I have played in his team since we were in U10s. Jake played sg ball this year for Wests Magpies and started several games in the Second Row. At Camden club level, Jake often shifted between positions from Prop, to Back Row, to Half Back, to Five Eighth. He is a good utility player and he just recently got signed by the Wests Tigers on a two year deal for the Toyota Cup squad. I believe, as a teammate, that he has the potential to make it into not just the squad but the Toyota cup team for next year. He is a future prospect and I wish him all the best. Just thought I'd let you all know some news that I know of, and that's the end of my first post.
Cheers

Cheers for the info Brent and welcome aboard! What position do you think is his best? Second Row? Any other info you can give - good defender, wide runner, good offload etc?

I think Jake's best position is in the back row, whether that be a tight defending lock or a wider positioned second row. As he has plenty of experience in the halves from his junior days, he does have very capable ball passing and kicking skills that should serve him very well as he progresses to the next level of representative footy. His defensive game is very good, he has good technique, he knows how to hold a player up, wrap the ball, work on the ground etc. As far as his hit-up ability goes, he can attract 2-3 defenders with his awkward running style, yet I think his passing game, and his ability to put players into a hole overshadows his own running ability. So to sum up, he is a good defender whether it be one on one or a gang tackle, and he has great ball skills for a forward due to his ability to play in the halves as well. I know his SG ball coach was happy with his work ethic and I really hope he is able to take his game to another level over the off season during pre season training with a group of older and stronger boys.

So if he has played some of his junior football in the halves, but is now in the backrow, is it fair to say he's bulked up quite a bit? Would he be considered at lock given his ball playing ability?

We're talking junior football here. Some teams just throw their best player there no matter how big or unsuited to the role he is.

Welcome to the Forum ,hope your mate steps it up in pre season and gets a run with the NYC boys

Sounds like he be better suited to be a wide running second rower and have him trying to get one on one with the halves or outside backs and use his ball skills after contact

During the upcoming pre season I would expect him to bulk up a bit more in order to be able to cope with the 'bigger' boys that you do see in the NYC, he has the height (probably around 190cm). He would suit the role of a ball playing lock or a wide running second row that can put his centre and wing away with good passes. (Hopefully Anasta can do this at Nrl level, that being a wide second row that can help put Lawrence back into form).

Just more information about our team that we played in (Camden Rams). We also played alongside Dean Britt since Under 10s, the son of former Bulldogs captain and prop Darren Britt. At the start of the year, Dean was signed by Melbourne Storm to the Toyota Cup team and this year he played well over half the games starting at second row. He has another 2 years left on his contract, and next year, as a player that is a year older and more experienced, he can begin to make a bigger impact in the NYC.

Another player, Matthew Applebee, son of former player Dave Applebee (I'm pretty sure his name was Dave..), has been in and out of the Toyota Cup squad at Penrith Panthers over the year but because of injury he had to withdraw. Hopefully this pre season and next year, 'Apples' gets given the opportunity to play for them because he is one aggressive player who knows how to put a big hit on. His position is hooker. He can be viewed as a similar player to Ennis, in terms of that 'Grubby' attitude.

The Group 6 region has definately got some potential to have some good Nrl players.

Most Recruitment Managers know this. I often see Mick Aldous the Canberra recruitment coordinator at Group 6 games.
