How best to replace Simon Dwyer?

With the terrible news still sinking in for many of us, I hope it does not seem too soon to start considering this… but now that the worst possible scenario looks likely in regards to Simon Dwyers injury - at least for a year or so - how best do we move on without him in our back row ranks?

Do we have enough youngsters coming through to cover the loss, or should we be looking around for another talented back rower? Surely he will free up a couple of hundred k??

I think we just upgraded his contract prior to this injury. i am not sure what he would be on but if his contract was upgraded he would have to be on 200K or there abouts

Jason Schirnack should be given first crack IMHO. Agreesive runner, big hitter in defence and he and Dwyer were at the same level in NYC.

Dwyer will still be paid but it will not count under our salary cap as there is the allowance for long term injury in the cap rules

Back three:- Ellis, Blair, Heino.

Ayshford, Sironen could fill in at lock at a pinch. You also have BMM and Groat who could play 2nd row.

Are you sure about that Smeg? I know that there have been a lot of complaints about the injury allowances and it's being further revised this year.

I could find out any info on the net about it.

I think that the injury to Dwyer is a perfect example of where the allowance should be used.

Likewise with Cherrington from the Roosters doing his ACL in the preseason

This season : Fulton is doing a great job playing on Dwyer and Lui's side 2012 Blair will play that side I am guessing .

Moors will be released i'd imagine, I think Blair comes in directly for Dwyer, Fulton heads to the bench, with the likes of BMM, Shaun Spence, the shirnacks being the back row depth.

Galloway, Woods, Groat will make up the front row rotation with Bergovich as the back up.

Bell will fit in as either and prob relieve the young guys who will most likely struggle to go week in week out at this point.

Think the pack will look something like this

13\. Heino
12\. Blair
11\. Ellis
10\. Galloway
9\. Farrah
8\. Woods

Fulton
Groat
and one of Bell, BMM, Bergovich or a bolter

At this stage I'd be look to something like this for a starting forward pack and interchange bench:

8\. Woods
9\. Farah
10\. Galloway
11\. Ellis
12\. Heighington
13\. Blair

14\. Bell
15\. Murdoch-Masila
16\. Fulton
17\. Begovich

The interchange bench is a mix of experience, size and youth while that forward pack should match just about any in the comp IMO.

U have to be kidding right? he plays close to 80 minutes every game and is still going strong in the 79th minute of every game making metres and being a great inspiration for the rest of our pack and team, he gives 110% untill hes busted black and blue…so before u start thinking of next year keep ya eyes pealed on what heino will be doing for us leading upto and IN THE FINALS

Groat is still eligible for the NYC and will not be rushed. I'd use him in the event of injuries. Otherwise I'd give Begovich a run ahead of him as they both play a similar style and Begovich has the better motor at this stage.

I actually think so too.
Fulton IMO could be a ball playing lock.

8\. Woods
10\. Galloway
11\. Blair
12\. Ellis
13\. Fulton

8-12 are all big players and carrying a lightweight like Fulton wouldn't make our pack too small.

Also,

14\. Back
15\. Heighno
16\. Bell
17\. Begovich/Groat (Surprised we haven't seen Begovich in 1st grade yet)

Reserve/20's

Begovich/Groat
BMM (depends greatly on his preseason)
Moors

typing this up, I realised we don't have that good a depth in the forwards as I thought, have i missed anyone?

I think we will see Blair, Fulton and Ellis in the back row with Hieghno fighting with Fulton for the right side position as Sheens has said Blair will be used in the middle. We then have BMM to add in and either of the Schrnacks as depth. In the front row we have Galloway, Woods, Bell, Groat, Begovich a great 5 props for our side. I am also surprised we haven't seen Begovich in the top side - I think he could well be named in the Toyota Cup team of the year and will definatly play some FG next year

21sixers: how about you read what Sheens said about Heighington a few weeks ago. His role will change next season.

No doubt he gives us 100% but I think it's the right call myself. I've never considered him an 80 minute player even if he often does play the full game. And more often than not this season he has NOT played 80.

So no, I am not kidding.

I think the "replacement" would be the fact that neither Fulton or Heighington will be released as was rumored…

next year:

8\. Blair
9\. Farah
10\. Galloway
11\. Ellis
12\. Fulton
13\. Heighington

14\. Moors
15\. Murdoch
16\. Bell
17\. Woods/Begovich/Groat/Pearn

Can't see Blair playing prop for us… too much cap for someone to only play half the time!

8\. Woods
9\. Farah
10\. Galloway

11\. Ellis
12\. BMM
13\. Blair

14\. Fulton
15\. Bell
16\. Groat
17\. Heighington

Think of Blair at Lock the opposite to what Gallen did in Origin
