How Come The Northern Eagles Licence Was Different?

Wests Ashfield CEO Simon Cook has said the name and logo are part of the Wests Tigers NRL licence, so the club won't be changing back to the Magpies. So what happened with Manly coming back after the Northern Eagles joint venture died?

im not 100% on this, but i think it has to do with the bailout from the nrl. as part of it, the wests tigers logo and branding are guaranteed to go on, and i think that this is because the club as a whole has borrowed $8m, and pretty much given up the rights to change to magpies.

again, not 100% on this, but i think that when north sydney was removed from the northern eagles jv, manly possibly took on all financial responsibilities without the nrl, thus allowing them to change the name back.

i think this is the case anyway…

It was vintage Manly ….. Pulling the rug from under the Bears and going on as they always did. And they wonder why they are the most hated club in the league.

Without the tigers it will be wests who? Know you magpies come out off your trees ah. Change back to magpies and have 100 members good luck.

The Wests vs Balmain thing is over. We are the Wests Tigers now.

The debate between inner west vs outer west however is continuing and is quite different and a far more complex thing to adequately solve.

Just a stab in the dark but Manly held the licence, just like Balmain did.

Yes Manly did hold the license. Norths went broke in 2001\. Manly got the license. Continued 1 more year (2002) as the Northern Eagles then reverted to being called Manly Warringah again. It was not a 50:50 joint venture.

Balmain did not hold the Wests Tigers license. The Wests Tigers Rugby League Football Pty Ltd (ACN 090 076 403) hold the NRL license.
The Wests Tigers board was made up of 5 Wests Group members and 5 Balmain FC members. A true 50:50 joint venture.

maybe it simply wasn't in anyone's interest to still be called the northern eagles?

the name left a dirty taste in many supporters mouths (the ones involved obviously) and had been around for what, 2 years? Manly's name was imprinted far more firmly in people's mind.

In comparison, by the time Balmain really have to face their debts the tigers will have gone through 17 years, a premiership and much more meaning a reversion to balmain/magpies wouldn't be in their interest nor the NRL's interest.

but many of the other points may also hold water too for sure

Norths actually went broke BEFORE the Northern Eagles JV was formed. Then Manly still put their hand up to form a JV with Norths but the license went to Manly (JV got from memory $10M)
