i was born at annandale 1940 followed the tigers all my life have been a member of balmain leagues club since 1966 i love the tigers and i was so pleased we joined with the magies to make the wests tigers ill love them till i die

You old bastard !! Remember when Leichhardt Oval ran the other way and the licenced club was the other side of Darling St? No choice for me, born in Balmain, went to school at the Christian Bros, spent all my waking hours at Birchgrove Oval, played for Codocks and Leichhardt Juniors (or Leichhardt Coaching Class as they were called in those days), went to my first game in the early 60's. Not good enough to play junior reps, went to Rugby when I was 19…..saw Barnes kick 9/9 against Saints in the early days, inclusing two from 55 metres

Apart from 05 and 69, my fav match was the 9-8 win against Great Britain in 1966\. It was midweek and I wagged school, sorry Bro Keogh :frowning:

Also won a 2000 Premierships with The Port Districts Magpies in Aussie Rules! Just happened to be the same year the Wests Tigers were formed! I was known as Nails! Hard as Nails the coach Dubby reckons!

Since I was in nappies I was a magpies supporter, my grandfather was a director at wests leagues club at Ashfield. During the 70's I spent alot of time in the sheds at lidcombe oval and got to spend a fair bit of time with Tommy Raudonikis who was my hero.

This is still my favourite topic of all time.
At the pub last night, I was telling mates about this topic, and we all chatted about how we became fans and early memories of how we became fans of our clubs.
My brother is a sharks fan, poor bloke, surprisingly i've never known why, he said last night that when he was young like most kids, didn't really support anyone, but loved the sharks colours and thought ET was a great nickname, for this he has a life time of pain.
Another guy wasn't really a fan of footy, but went to a grand final party, everyone was cheering for Penrith, he cheered for Canberra, they won, he was won over, now he is a rabid canberra fan.

Simple things shape our lives

Born and bred. My uncles who were in their 20's at the time were supposed to baby sit me one night so my oldies could have a night out. Instead they took me to Leichardt to watch Balmain.

As I grew older they had a successful business and sponsored the club. I remember going to so many games as a young bloke, and having a box next to Dawn Fraser and having a kick with Sirro at a fan day one on one. Whenever I met a player it was more exciting then Christmas.

Everytime I look across Leichardt oval these days and see the hill in black, orange and white I get reminded of why this is the greatest club in the game.

When I was growing up I never was much into footy. In 1989 I watched the grand final with my dad and it was the first time I saw him cry.

The passion I saw that day stayed with me over the next few weeks, and from the next season I religiously supported the tigers with him.

He unfortunately passed away in 1996 and to this day that vision of my dad shattered after the loss in extra time is engraved in my memory. My passion for the tigers started from that day and each week when I go to the games it reminds me of that memory and my dad.

WHAT A TOPIC! Congratulations benji_da_gun on coming up with the idea. I’ve read the lot to date and enjoyed all the stories!
My story starts in 1948 (this is true!), when my Dad took me to Brookvale Oval to see Wests Magpies play Manly. We lived in Auburn and took the train to Ashfield and then a special football bus to Brooky. I played junior football for Auburn, in an era, when Lidcombe had a very good team, because they stole some of the better Auburn players. Dad and I never missed Magpies games or representative games until part-time University got in the way in the late 1950’s.
In 1961, I met my (now) wife, whose family were mad Magpies supporters. Her uncle played first grade five-eight for the Magpies in 1930, when they won the competition and her cousin played first grade half for them in the late 1960’s. We hardly missed a match for years and cried through the 1961, 1962 and 1963 grand finals.
Being a member of Wests Ashfield, my wife and I spent many after match times at the Club with Gil McDougall, Jim Cody, Fred Norden, Rob McGuiness, Peter Dimond and many others. After we were married, we lived in Frederick Street, Ashfield, so Wests Ashfield became our second home.
With the birth of our two sons, the death of my Dad and our first home at Baulkham Hills, we stopped going to matches, but kept cheering for Wests from home.
In 1987, friends of ours bought season tickets to Orana Park, so we started going to matches again. The drive from Campbelltown to Oakville (near Windsor) was very long after losses, but much shorter when Wests had some of their rare wins.
Fortunately, both sons, daughters-in-law and grand-children are all Wests Tigers supporters, which does mean there are few arguments about football in the family. We attend some matches, but the grand-children’s sport and dancing gets in the way on many week-ends.

With ^ for a Dad, didn't have much choice in who I followed… Loved the maggies, now love the tigers too!

As a little tike, I loved Parra. Ray price, Brett Kenny and Sterlo were it to me.

Come high school, my Dad took me to a game a Campbelltown ( where i grew up ) and we watched Wests play. From that day I was a Maggies fan, always laughed when the cheergirls were called Westettes and I called me Maggettes …

I refused to watch football when the merger happened. I wanted us to be like Souths and stand up to the league and stand alone. I got over that and am now a dedicated fan with 3 boys. One loves the Tigers and the other 2 are still young but will have no choice ...

my grandparents lived at, and father grew up at forest lodge, in of those terraced houses directly opposite harold park. they were balmain supporters through and through and this has now been handed down through four generations and counting. i have a number of nieces and nephews who i have managed to make them ' see the light ' and are deadset keen tigers supporters. as many have already said, why would you even consider following any other side.

What a great post.I've been a Western Suburbs follower through the 1960's to the present,I remember well the big clashes with the Dragons at that time.Although born in Q'ld,I loved the Sydney footy.I could tell everyone more about the Sydney clubs than Q'ld ones,in those times if you were any good in Q'ld a Sydney club would soon buy you.At that time Wests had a few going around namely Noel kelly,Kel O'Shea.Of Course Balmain had some Q'd as well,Arthur Beetson (a hard running center),along with George Ambrum (a quality winger/center).In this era Q'ld players in Sydney could play for NSW in the Q'ld v NSW yearly go around,so you could become a dual state rep.So I have followed West tigers from the start of the club and still do even if I live in NQ home of the Cowboys.I myself played in Q'ld country, back in the 1950/1960.I would have loved to been good enough to play in Sydney, especially for the mighty magpies….

Dad was a Balmain fan, got it into me at a young age (probably with some lies), I didn't know I had a choice. If I knew I may have picked the local team (Parra) so I dodged a bullet there.

Was a magpie and if the joint venture had not have gone this way, i would hav given it away but 2 teams that have around for years, this is a joint venture nd not a take over like 1\. now im a tiger through and through and always will be

Too true Mowgli, but there is no better feeling yhan going to Suncorp and seeing the Tigers beat Brisbane…..;

I moved to Rozelle in the mid 70s and went to my first ever league game in around 1978, at Leichhardt.

Larry Corowa scored at least one try that day, running like the wind on the left wing. He was something to see. I can still hear the fans shouting "Give it to Larry, give it to Larry!" I think he scored 24 tries that year, and I could not believe how fast he was; so exciting to watch, he just floated across the ground. As I recall, the team also included Wayne Miranda, Wayne Wigham, Allan McMahon and Neil Pringle. Of course, thanks to Larry, I was an immediate convert to both the game and the team, and have been an obsessive Tigers fan ever since.

I live in Brisbane now, and can't get to home games, but I haven't lost the faith - even though you risk your life supporting anything other than a Queensland team at Suncorp!

My uncle gave me a Balmain glass when i was 6,thats all it took.33 years later and a Queenslander GO THE TIGERS!

I started understanding the game around 1988 when I was 5\. Followed Balmain through the finals and cried when we lost the GF. That was the start.

My dad hates rugby league, but my uncle loved Tigers, so whenever Balmain would play Seagulls he would travel up and take me to the game at Tweed Heads. Loved getting off school early to make the trip up for a Friday night game!

Favourite player was Pearce, but I only got the meet Sirro as a kid after he completed a sideline interview taping before the game.

Loved rushing the field too, never got a corner post though.

A great regret is not seeing a Tigers home game yet, living in Northern NSW makes it hard to travel down to Sydney just for 1 game. One day I will make sure to see a game at Leichhardt though.
