How to get the best out of Ellis

First off i think big Gareth had a great 1st up season in the big leagues. Some big hits and great defence, however, i think he is at his best when he is running the ball, we didn't see enough of this. Perhaps his defencive work load hampered this a little.

The inclusion of Liam Fulton should free up a bit of defence, and hopefully an injury free Heighno, allowing Ellis to run the ball with more vigor, stand in the tackle (he'd have to be one of the hardest players in the league to put on the ground) and off load to our speed men out wide (Lawrence, benji, moltzen, TUQIRI, how good would that be!!). Or even better smash through the defence himself.

He is a very big unit and we should be using him wide of the ruck, running like a man possessed!!

What are everyone elses thoughts??

I think Fulton's defence will add a lot of petrol to all of the other forwards attacking fuel tank.

Not sure if that will be the case. Fulton doesn't stop them getting a roll on.

Gareth does though - he can put a hit on and his defence stops the opposition getting a roll on. I'd love to see him bust the line more but geez he had a good first season. Imo he was easily our best forward and one of the best in the NRL.

I think Ellis will play more on the fringes. He runs some very good under lines and if can work on that combination with Marshall and the other play makers, then I am sure you will see more breaks and more tries coming from Ellis. Once again, space comes from good go-forward for which our bookends and wingers need to give us on the early tackles.

That may be true, but I can tell you who will be making the highest number of cover tackles when others get lazy, and that is where the other forwards will benefit.

Dont be so sure that with Fultons inclusion in the team the rest of the forward packs defensive work is going to decrease. I agree Fulton has a very high work rate but the 2010 team their will be no Morris and probably no Gelea. Those two plays had their short comings but they made a lot of tackles especially on line MUST tackles. So i only see Fulton as balancing them out at best. Its the inclusion of a couple of quality front rowers(fingers crossed) that might allow us to play the big Pom a little wider.

IMO he needs to play wider of the ruck in attack - he would be devastating on the edges.

where do you want him,out on the sideline.
80% of his runs were out wide.

Funny, thats what I thought when I read that post.

Id have him wide and cutting in and out of Bunji, maybe a flick every now and then,Gaz wouldnt need much space to wreak havoc,he was killing it in traffic.

Interesting thread…...Id have him getting the ball a little earlier off Bunji rather than a money ball.

I like that idea simon. I didn't see too much of his work in the ESL but apparently he was finding the line on a regular occurance (138 tries from 246 matches is not bad for a backrower) maybe earlier ball is the best option. Gives him time to size up who he wants to run at.

how to get the best out of Gareth, for a start, do not expect him to do most of the defending.
also do not have him running wide all of the time. the opposition will expect him to be doing this.
use a variety of where he runs to.
when close to the line have him about 10 metres back get him running with full power
and run straight up the centre toward the goal posts.

I think if Robbie can get outrof hooker there will be space for him to get yards in behind the ruck. But it always a good option for him to run of the second recievers and run at the smaller guys but most of this relies on him getting a bit of a rest in defence. Maybe see him making 1 to 2 less tackles a set?

Why don't we ask those nuffies in the England side? They managed to get him over the try line last night, something that we couldn't do all season!

And herein lies where I believe Liam Fulton will prove so handy next year with his defensive workrate.Helping out ellis. :righton: :righton: :righton:

Ellis was a great buy and let's pray he stays injury free in 2010.
