How would we develop a player like Pat Richards?

Forum regulars will know who Pat Richards is, for those who don't here is his version of a try assist.

Now he is a winger. A winger who could play ball better then some halfbacks. He could kick from the wing which threw teams off.

Basically he is unique in Rugby league. I totally value this. A comment from Sterlo once "there are only 3 teams in the comp that are doing something different. Wests Tigers, Manly and <some else I can't remember>. The rest are trying to be melbourne".

In short we get a player like Pat Richards, we do something totally different on the wing. If you think that doesn't work, see the video above.

What we want to do is something different? Why because we can't beat Melbourne and Easts at their game. They will outspend us and do their game better. Why because we want to be different, seeing 16 teams play the same style as Melbourne sucks we might as well just watch the MMA.
We want to be Fun as well.

But how do we develop someone like Pat?

You can’t develop players like that. If you could, i’d rather produce another Tedesco or Andrew Johns. All respect to Patty.

Not sure you can, you either have it or you don't.

Patty was a tall, rangy, ball playing FB/winger that had exceptional hands, passed and supported well + his kicking game was next to none. The complete package.

Not sure why we let him go to Wigan in '06?

If I was to compare anyone in todays game to Patty, it has to be JAC. Similar physical attributes, safe hands and a strike finishing pedigree.

He just needs to learn how to kick...

Hire pat....

Pat was brought in by Madge as an assistant coach at the Bunnies in 2016. So they have a relationship.

I'd hire him at WT in a heartbeat.

Tigers almost need to adopt a Moneyball style of mentality. If we try to emulate the Roosters and the Storm off the field, they will end up destroying us on the field. We don't have the resources regardless of what we have in cap space. We need to adapt our way of thinking and how we see our players.

Adapt or die.....

Just my opinion of course

Well he originally came from Parra ..so I guess the answer is to wait for Parra to develop him and then steal him

He was unwanted / wallowing in reggies at Parra, so the true answer is wait for Parra to develop him, wait for Parra to take him for granted, then steal him.

Worked for Richards, Slimy Fart, Aloiai, Twal, the new bloke Stefano etc.

You seem to forget he badly broke his leg before coming to the WT's ...similarly as did Prince

His kickoffs were awesome - surely we can hire hi to coach them

The only other bloke who can do them is Kyle Feldt, but I don't think Patty coached him how.

I am guessing it's not really in the coaching, it's specifically in the ability to put monster kicks on from the deck. If it was only coaching, every club would be doing it every kickoff?

The vid was great, but they left out the one where Molzten scored off the kickoff against Souths, wasn't that a Pat Richards KO too?

Didn't forget at all. We saw an opportunity with Patty and Parra let it happen.

Hodgo was injured too, playing reggies when we signed him up. That 2004 into 2005 team was full of op-shop players who couldn't quite string together large numbers of FG games, but had the ability if they could stay fit and firing. Whatuira, Elford, Payten etc.

I think you might be right - that was a cracker.

He broke his leg twice at Parra. He came here for a fresh start I think.
