Tigers fans: Your team needs you
BY ALICIA SYLVESTER AND SCOTT DOUGHERTY AT THE STADIUM

WESTS Tigers coach Tim Sheens has paid the ultimate compliment to Campbelltown’s fans after the 26-18 win over North Queensland on Sunday at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

He said fans got the players over the line for the win, which is now the club’s fifth straight victory.

‘‘I’m glad we were playing here though, that’s for sure,’’ Sheens said.

‘‘Last week was the same [at Leichhardt Oval] — that little bit of extra energy we got from the crowd — the homeground was a bonus.’’

The passion and noise of the crowd in the final 20 minutes of the nail-biter wasn’t in question; but their number was.

When the crowd figure of 13,059 was announced, there was surprise, and even disgust among fans.

‘‘Where is everyone?’’ and ‘‘How can you expect more home games when you don’t show up?’’ were some of the

cries uttered around the stands.

The small number for the first Sunday afternoon game in two years was not unnoticed by Wests Tigers chief executive, Stephen Humphreys.

‘‘It would have been nice to have a few more [people at the game] but the reality is we all struggle for crowds during the Origin period,’’ he told the Advertiser.

‘‘I was hoping for 15,000 or 16,000 but we’re really appreciative of those who did come, and I think they had a good time and they enjoyed it.

‘‘Hopefully they’ll come back next time and bring some friends with them.

‘‘The people who didn’t come today, they missed out on a good show.’’

Campbelltown local and Tigers legend John Skandalis said if Campbelltown’s Tigers fans want more NRL games, they needed to show up.

‘‘Fair enough: it was a bit cold and North Queensland don’t have a big supporter base down here,’’ he said.

‘‘But if they want more games here, they need to make it more appealing for the club to play more.’’]([www.macarthuradvertiser.com.au](http://www.macarthuradvertiser.com.au)[/url

Someone yelled out ‘‘How can you expect more home games when you don’t show up’’???

Seems a bit odd to me!

whether you are playing St George or the Cowboys, 13000 on a Bright Sunday afternoon is disgusting, particularly at a suburban ground.

That was probably me.

I have a penchant for yelling out longer statements that have no right to be yelled out as they are neither succint nor catchy

Imagine what the Panthers must be thinking. They played the premiers, a Sydney team, at 2pm on the same Sunday afternoon and got 11,500.

Time for some stats…..I am struggling to upload a chart which shows the rolling average of crowds at both venues since the inception of the JV. I have the chart as a bitmap and for some reason it won't upload - some assistance please...

However, from the chart, a couple of observations:
1\. Campbelltown had significantly higher averages than Leichhardt in the early years of the JV (13733 v 10400);
2\. The rate of growth in average crowds between the two grounds since 2006 has been similar;
3\. The drop off in the average of Campbelltown since inception is extremely significant. The decline bottomed out in 2004 (10,368) and has risen ever since.
4\. Campbelltown's rolling average fell below Leichhardt during 2004

Draw what you want from these numbers.

See I'd believe it more if someone yelled out "This crowd is slightly disappointing when you consider that compared to seeing a move at Hoyts it really isn't bad value at all!"

Probably didn't want to get shouted down with retorts regarding validity of the statement and ethics in relation to film piracy.

You can't expect fans to show up and support our club when the club won't support their base team of the district

I hate to say it, but its true….the big wigs cannot expect it to go both ways. When the magpie side of the joint venture is negleted, what do they expect?? Just my opinion and I dont want to start and us and them war again.
I will follow WESTSTIGERS because I have excepted the joint venture.

The avg fan, family out Campbelltown way wouldn't either give this a passing thought. I truly believe there are other factors around this. They need to do some research and find out why fans did not flock to see a WT team trying to get it's 5th win in a row and get it's roll on for the serious end of the season…

So true. To take the wife and 3 boys to the movies, throw a couple of Choc-tops and some popcorn into em gives me no change from $130\. 5 Semi final tickets last year cost me $150\. Your paying to watch the best Rugby League in the world. Price shouldn't be the issue.

I agree here. I don't think people are saying "Ohh the Magpies aren't doing much locally, so I'm not going to any Tigers games until they do". Come on.

Lol screaming from the stands were they? what was it 'how can you expect more games when people don't turn up'? yeah i realy buy the fact someone yelled that out :unamused:

For those who think it has something to do with the decline of the Wests Premier League side or should I say lack of support, I think your dreaming. Bar a few old faithfuls the average punter who rocks up to a game would not even know we played in the premier league. They come for the main game and thats it, the days of making a day of it are gone people are time poor, its all about hit and run.

Their must be a good reason why people are not turning up to Cambo in their droves, really it should be a sell out every week when the team is on a roll. The area they draw their punters from is massive, do they support other teams or just not into the NRL. I think our CEO should get some serious market research underway

Now don't get me wrong i have been a Magpies supporter since my dad was the bar manager at Leumeah back in the 80's. And i love this team and watching them play (i blame them for my grey hair as well).

But i have 2 Kids and a wife and on one income and with house repayment and the cost off living these days there is no way that i can afford to take the family to a game. The powers to be need to bring in some family tickets that are more reasonable or some other way to entice family's to get out and support the boys.

But if i was Humphreys i can afford to go. I would love to see him do in on a budget like most family's in our region.

Maybe for a normal NSW Cup game I agree But this is a game between our two entities of the Joint Ventures and most would agree lots of us come from one or the other

It is a game where we can barrack against each other in a friendly atmosphere If any game of NSW Cup was going to get a much better crowd this would of been my choice of the most popular game .

Then we could all come back together as one and support the Wests Tigers . Our Team

WT need a stronger presence in the macarthur area. Rugby League families and good junior talent. WT Basing themselves in concord and clinging onto the 'tigertown' (leichhardt/balmain) and spiritual home of leichhardt thing (promoted by media and some people in WT) its hardly a team that campbelltown can embrace. Regardless of being an old magpie fan or not. Mix that with nsw cup debacle (not to blame for lower nrl crowds) and often poor scheduling at campbeltown (cold monday nights with peak hour traffic) and you have a less than ideal mix
