Tigers fans: Your team needs you
BY ALICIA SYLVESTER AND SCOTT DOUGHERTY AT THE STADIUM
WESTS Tigers coach Tim Sheens has paid the ultimate compliment to Campbelltown’s fans after the 26-18 win over North Queensland on Sunday at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.
He said fans got the players over the line for the win, which is now the club’s fifth straight victory.
‘‘I’m glad we were playing here though, that’s for sure,’’ Sheens said.
‘‘Last week was the same [at Leichhardt Oval] — that little bit of extra energy we got from the crowd — the homeground was a bonus.’’
The passion and noise of the crowd in the final 20 minutes of the nail-biter wasn’t in question; but their number was.
When the crowd figure of 13,059 was announced, there was surprise, and even disgust among fans.
‘‘Where is everyone?’’ and ‘‘How can you expect more home games when you don’t show up?’’ were some of the
cries uttered around the stands.
The small number for the first Sunday afternoon game in two years was not unnoticed by Wests Tigers chief executive, Stephen Humphreys.
‘‘It would have been nice to have a few more [people at the game] but the reality is we all struggle for crowds during the Origin period,’’ he told the Advertiser.
‘‘I was hoping for 15,000 or 16,000 but we’re really appreciative of those who did come, and I think they had a good time and they enjoyed it.
‘‘Hopefully they’ll come back next time and bring some friends with them.
‘‘The people who didn’t come today, they missed out on a good show.’’
Campbelltown local and Tigers legend John Skandalis said if Campbelltown’s Tigers fans want more NRL games, they needed to show up.
‘‘Fair enough: it was a bit cold and North Queensland don’t have a big supporter base down here,’’ he said.
‘‘But if they want more games here, they need to make it more appealing for the club to play more.’’]([www.macarthuradvertiser.com.au](http://www.macarthuradvertiser.com.au)[/url
