Humphreys hopes Gibbs will stay a Tiger

I dont think confusing at all, it's basically saying, someone has approached gibbs, he told the club, which the club then said he was more than aloud to look at his options, but there has been no real strong movement on gibbs part to leave the club, he's just looking at his options.
But the club has stated they can fullfil gibbs contract, but they will not re-sign fulton if the tigers do get blair.

Gibbs has been a great servant of the club, recently signed a new contract to 2014 now wants to negotiate with other clubs yet there are no strong moves from Gibbs???? Does he want to stay or does he want to go???? If he wants to stay then say so and quash the speculation as it must be unsettling for the club and team, if he wants to go then the writer could have done some further research to find out why and put that in the story so the reader doesn't have to guess- is it more money elsewhere? does he have problems with WTs? does the club want to get rid of him? Has he moved house and wants to play near where he lives? etc? I missed Fulton's name in the article.

"Humphrey's optimistic" is code for "Gibbs told to find another club"
it's kind of like when politicians say "Our leader will lead us to the next election. Everyone is 100% behind him"… a few months later they are replaced

and another, the Board has full confidence in him….....

HYPOTHETICAL - Possible scenario is he is happy here, signs a modest contract until 2014, Cronulla lose Douglas and Snowden, Cronulla approach Gibbs's agent with an offer significantly more than his offer here to repalce the two props that they've lost.

Or "[insert coach's name] is under contract until [fill in year]. We have no plans to replace him"

Translation: We've been pulling allnighters trying to find someone else and shread his contract now!!

Sheens and Humphreys have to have a strategy in place in relation to player retention and redundancy that is always looking three years ahead. You dont want be like the Aussie cricket side or even a few tiger teams in the past where a lot of players all finished their careers at the same time and in some cases went on a year or so to long.

So hard decisions have to be made, they are not always going to be the right decisions but up to date Sheens has been pretty well much on the money with the players he has let go. Gibbs is a great player, but he plays in a position that for once we have good depth so maybe his money can be directed in another area.

Time will tell,we are not running a social club so hard calls have to be made if you want to compete with the best and maybe this is one of those hard calls

I hope Gibbs stays, we need him, its a huge contribution when he fires up and plays well.

I think it means if you can get a better deal somewhere else, go for it, no hard fealings.

However if you want to stay, Ok but the club won't be paying out your contract or proping up your contract at another club.

I think all this is fair enough

Gibbs and Fulton are the Tigers version of ABBOTT & COSTELLO, full of dumb and stupid mistakes. It's time for a clean out.

Fulton being used as a first receiver yard man today was like sending ute to move 20tons of bricks. Was a big ask and was never going to work. Ellis will fill the role next week

Personally, I don't want to see the Tigers release Gibbs & Fulton in order to attain Blair- which seems to be the focus of the potential moves.

Here's the thing- I think the Tigers have enough of their salary cap invested into the forwards as it is. Guys like Gibbs & Fulton are valuable because they are not what you consider 'elite' and don't eat up large chuncks of the salary cap- allowing a club to distribute the wealth into other positions as well.

I don't know the exact figures, but I know I've read that Galloway is being paid a lot. Ellis must be on a nice wage. Heighington I'm sure is doing alright too. And then there's Farah as well. 4 out of our starting 6 guys MUST be in the top earning bracket for this club. In the backs- Benji & Lawrence & Lote would be on good money, but the others would likely be 'value'.

Now the club wants to rid themselves of 2 'value' guys to include another 'elite' guy. In theory- yes, it makes sense. But the money invested in Galloway/Ellis/Heighington/Farah does not make the Tigers forward pack any better, or arguably even as good, as most of the forward packs in NRL. On paper- yes, very impressive. But on the field- for the money invested- they really don't dominate any other pack.

Will Blair make the Tigers forwards 'dominant'? Unlikely, in my opinion.

I can see why the Tigers want to sign Blair. I do- he's a good player. But, instead of dropping the hard working value players, I'd replace one of our high-priced non-dominant 'elite' players with Blair. Galloway for example- who is, I'm happy to admit, a fine player. But he's not 'elite', despite him being in our higher pay bracket. Let's say, for arguments sake, that Galloway is on $350k. Gibbs is on say $180k (I'm guessing here- anyone with facts jump in..) Ellis would have to be around the $350k mark too. Heighington…$280k perhaps? The Tigers just re-signed Woods & Fifita, 2 very promising types. Would the Tigers pack be THAT much better with Blair & Galloway up front instead of say, Gibbs & Blair?

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I don't think it's the 'value' type guys that need upgrading- I think it's our 'elite' guys. In particular- our forwards. I don't think we get the return on the financial investment from these guys.

Payton going should free up around the $200k or so, I'd imagine. Woods & Fifita's upgraded contracts would eat up a bit of that.

What to do with Ellis is also to be considered. I mean, he's already said he wants to finish his career in England. How long do we have him for? I can see Woods & Fifita being the long-term front row for the Tigers, with Gibbs on the bench. Groat looks very promising too. Do the Tigers NEED to invest heavily in new props with these guys doing the job at value prices? Wouldn't the 'elite' money be better served making sure these guys don't fly the coup in the future? If Blair is brought in to be a 2nd row partner to Dwyer- I see value- as I don't think the Schirnacks look very dominant. So a backrow of Heighington, Blair & Dwyer combined with our young front rowers & Gibbs looks pretty good to me. Then you have Groat, Fulton & a Schirnack on the bench with Gibbs- that's a strong bench.

I think I've rambled a bit...I guess what I'm saying is- invest your 'elite' money on the future forwards & look to upgrade the non-dominant 'elite' players with more dominant 'elite' guys- get value for the money spent.

Chadman's ghost you make a really good point. At the moment it is our outside backs that need an upgrade.

The forwards if fit and if the young players coming through step up are looking good.

I'd still like to see Blair in our team. He is a better player than both Gibbs and Fulton.

Gibbs and Fulton aren't threatening in defence or attack. Gibbs stats would show his metre's gained to be in the negative with all the penalties he gives away!
