**This is Joe McCord**
This is Joe McCordBRIEF BIO: Eight years experience as a trustee on a community college board; 28 years US Army (Lt. Col, ret); Bachelor’s degree in History, University of California, Berkeley; Master’s degree in Business Economics, University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, Colorado; ran own successful business until retirement; father and grand-father.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: I believe I can bring maturity and stability to a board which has experienced more than its share of internal dissension and infighting. I have long experience in working with people who, sometimes, have widely divergent views. I’ve learned how to bring people together for the common good of all. In the case of the Peoria Unified School District, that “common good” is the better education of our children. I firmly believe in providing the very best education we can afford.
NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS:
1\. Led a successful District-wide campaign for a bond issue (requiring a 2/3rds majority) which provided the funds to build a community college in a tri-city area — after six previous efforts had failed.
2\. Headed up a Technical Committee which developed a computer program which vastly improved the Army’s recruiting efforts worldwide and saved many millions of taxpayer dollars in the process. I was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for my efforts as head of the Committee.
3\. Organized a dinner/dance which raised $5,000 in one night for the family of a wounded Peoria policeman.
4\. After four years of continuous effort, still leading the effort to reroute sand, gravel, and cement trucks away from a retirement community where toxic fumes from the trucks are causing serious illnesses to many of the residents. Although still an ongoing effort, a major victory was achieved during June when the Peoria City Council unanimously agreed to allocate $10 million to fund an alternate route if a November bond issue is successful.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: An interest in education runs in the McCord family. My older brother taught at the high school level for 30 years before retiring. A sister taught for years after securing her Ph.D in Clinical Psychology, including several years aboard large U.S. Navy ships on world-wide tours. Another sister was a member of a school board for many years. I have a daughter who has an earned Ph.D in Education (from Univ. of Calif., Berkeley) and currently is a teacher and consultant on educational matters. I have been a guest lecturer at the university level in the area of Political Science and, currently, teach a once-a-week class in Basic Physics for children and adults at the Challenger Space Science Center in Peoria.
