It’s the stepping stone to the Wallabies v the Kangaroos.
Or even the mighty Wigan rugby league team in England against the NSW Waratahs.
Two of Sydney’s most famous old footy clubs have agreed to play in a hybrid game the weekend after the NRL grand final in October.
Randwick’s Galloping Greens will meet the Western Suburbs Magpies at Pirtek Stadium on October 11 for the Hybrid Challenge Cup.
And their two greatest players were there for the announcement — the Magpies’ team-of-the-century hooker Noel ‘Ned’ Kelly and Randwick’s one and only Mark Ella.

The hybrid game will raise money — and aims to spark interest.
The hybrid game is a mixture of rules from both codes with two referees (one from each code) to enforce the laws.
Teams play the ball like rugby league when attacking from their own half but as soon as the side in possession crosses the halfway mark, they play rugby union — including rucks and mauls.
The organisers, headed by Hybrid chairman Phil Franks, are hoping to raise $100,000 from the event for the Starlight foundation.
Negotiations are under way with Fox Sports and the free-to-air channels for a live coverage.
“This is just the start,” Franks said. “It’s been a long process to get two different codes to agree to it and I’m sure this game will be the catalyst for even bigger events down the track. The dream is for the Kangaroos v Wallabies.”
“Have something on the league boys,” Kelly declared at Wednesday’s launch at Pirtek Stadium, “The Magpies are a proud old club who want to win every time they step onto a football field.
“The way the NRL is at the moment with all the rules changes, this game won’t be hard to follow.

“And a lot is riding on this first game. If it goes well and becomes an entertaining contest, the fans will want more of it.”

Randwick captain Sam Figg insists the Galloping Greens will be treating the game seriously.
“For me personally I love it because I’ve always wanted to have a go at rugby league,” he said.
“So playing hybrid rules will give me an opportunity. I think in this day and age every contest is a contest.
“At Randwick we’re treating it very seriously and we want to take the trophy home, the same as Wests do.”
Ella says it will become an annual fixture and lead to bigger events.
“The rules are designed to make it a fast, open game and attractive to the fans,” he said.
“People who want to see a good hard game of footy will get exactly that.
“Will Randwick win? I don’t know. Just same the game will be the winner.”
