I don't want to be like Sheens: Potter

Mick Potter faces an almighty challenge as only the second man in NRL history to succeed a coach who has held the reins at one club for a decade or longer.

Perhaps the new Wests Tigers mentor should give Ivan Henjak a call.

Potter's appointment might be a fresh start for the Tigers, but taking over from Tim Sheens opens up a daunting unknown.

In assuming the job at Tigertown, first-time NRL coach Potter is well aware of the long shadow his predecessor cast but determined to do the job his own way.

Sheens' 10-year stint at the Tigers is the third-longest coaching run in league history, bettered only by Wayne Bennett's 21 years at Brisbane and soon by Craig Bellamy - who is about to start his 11th straight season at premiers Melbourne.

Henjak took over from Bennett in 2009 at the Broncos, but lasted just two years before he was sacked.

Sheens' standard of success wasn't as high as Bennett's, but expectations are high at the Tigers. As ever, the club craves a return to the euphoria of 2005, when they were premiers under Sheens.

Potter, a former champion fullback for Canterbury and St George and most recently coach of Bradford in the English Super League, recognises the pressure.

He won't comment on whether the Tigers players needed a new beginning, but says he's happy to be the man to effect change at Concord.

"The players are responding to me very well," said Potter.

"On a day to day basis (taking over from Sheens) is not an issue. But I'm sure there will be comparisons, or differences pointed out, whether they be good or bad.

"It doesn't bother me in the least really.

"Tim Sheens has coached a million first grade games, I've coached none. I've got the utmost respect for the guy.

"But I don't want to be Tim Sheens. I don't want to coach like Tim Sheens. I just want to coach like Mick Potter."

For the first time in their NRL careers, favourite sons Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah, as well as most of their teammates, will take directions from a coach other than Sheens.

But as has been consistently the case since 2005, the Tigers have the talent to make the finals.

Keith Galloway and Aaron Woods up front are capable of dominating any front row, and the likes of Marshall, Farah, Chris Lawrence and first-choice fullback Tim Moltzen form a sizzling combination in attack.

Under 20s premiership-winning graduate Jacob Miller will get first crack at halfback.

However, finding creativity and thrust in their backrow remains an unknown for the Tigers.

The departure of Englishman Gareth Ellis leaves a gaping hole and the club has also let go of their rock at lock, Chris Heighington.

Seasoned recruit Braith Anasta will hand in his five-eighth licence and become a permanent second rower for the Tigers, with Adam Blair and Liam Fulton likely to start alongside him at the back of the scrum.

Blair is the sleeping giant in the Tigers pack. A brilliant hole-runner and destructive ball carrier blessed with silky skills.

"I'm happy with everything Adam is doing. He's a professional," Potter said.

Potter said Anasta was an invaluable addition with his kicking and ball skills and natural leadership ability.

"He's made an instant impact without any fanfare or any beating of his chest," he said.

BenjiMGic, maybe they're not big, but thats the best backrow. But of course it will change over time with injury. But i would be happy with that backrow in the semis.

Just thought they may get put on show if we vs big teams like the bulldogs

Big difference between Potter taking over from Sheens compared to Henjak succeeding Bennett.

Bennett was successful.
Henjak had a tuff act to follow.

They"ll outsmart them.

Comparing Harry Potter with Ivan is a no brainer,,,Wayne BENNETT actually got his teams into the Top 8!!! I can smell the deep heat and its getting hot!!! Tigaaaar

But would Mick like to be like… http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2013/feb/18/brian-mcdermott-leeds-rhinos-donald-mcrae Its a very good down to earth interview with the Rhinos Coach

Please no, not Fulton and Anasta on at the same time.

Fulton should be on the field for 80mins and act as our Hindmarsh, plugging holes and just tackle his butt off making 50+ a game. He never has offered much in attack due to his size but Rhino didnt do a whole lot for the last a few years either. Id much prefer Anasta with his skills and experience in the pack than Rhino.

Bell, BMM, Buchanon, Groat, Pettybourne, Thompson, Gavet etc (best 3 at the time) can go hard and make 15-20 min impacts from the bench in rotation with Woods, Galloway and Blair.

What we loose in weight from the starting forward line up should be covered with smart interchanges, great D and a smart/skillful lineup with Farah, Fulton and Anasta on the field for 80mins.

Remind me of Bennetts record at the Broncos and then compare Sheens record at the Tigers in both win lose stats and Semi Finals made

Bennetts just shades Sheens I think ,just :astonished:

henjak replaced bennett.. .a guy that won multiple premierships…. sheens won just the 1 and failed to make semis a number of times... comparison is hardly the same..

its a great combo attack wise…
both know how to hit the ball and run hard as well as ball play... i think it will work...
time will tell, but anasta is the guy we have needed. he's going to be so much more useful than what heighington was.

Mick doesn't want to be like Tim,and I sure as hell don't want him to be like Sheens,so maybe we have turned the corner, and no more half hearted efforts will be rewarded on tuesday evenings.

Liam fulton will never be as effective as Hindmarsh.50 Tackles yes but not bone jarring ones that Hindy could pull off because of his size. Also Fults offers nothing as a Physical damaging runner which we really need.Fulton is a very good hole runner but we have plentyof them but not many truly intimidating big types.

Journalists rating Heighington as a big loss are clueless. Either they havnt watched our games for years or are just'beefing' up their article. We are way out in front in the Anasta in for Heighington out senario.

just the change in coach/attitude will blow the cobwebs out big time and we will smash everyone

that's what I'm hoping anyway!

Anasta cost us less too from what I've heard.

As much as he gave to the club we needed a mini clean out we had to get some new players in and start looking for the future we have been to basic for many of years now and we need a change and its happening im 100% we will see the real tigers this year.

Missed the point. Its not that he should get out there and hit them as hard as Hindmarsh, although i reckon his "bone jarring" tackles were few and far between. It was simply to act in a similar role and plug up the holes, scramble defence etc, because of his size he is mobile for a forward and can make/get to other tackles the rest of the forwards cant. What he lacks in the size of Hindy he makes up for it with his agility and pace. The other forwards should be the ones making the hard hits in Defence and Attack, if we have to rely on Fults for that than we are in big trouble. Just have Liam running around all day plugging gaps and scrambling for 80mins. Leave the impact of D and Attack to the guys swapping in and out for 15-20mins from the bench. If he doesnt start then he really has no part in the team. He isnt a "bone jarring" defender and he isnt a damaging runner. The only thing he offers is running around on the field for 80mins makng tackles.

Id have Anasta and Fults in the back row everyday of the week and have BMM, Bell, Pettybourne coming in for Galloway, Woods and Blair. Barring injury Galloway, Woods and Blair should play around 60mins a game, with reduced time for Blair and Woods this season should see them be more effective and damaging with and without the ball and the other 3 guys come off the bench and just go mental for 20mins to offer huge impact in D and attack.

Hindmarsh hadn't made a "bone-jarring" tackle for five years. He made 50 tackles a game, half of which were third man in.

Hindmarsh was a hopeless ball player as well… At least Fulton can find his way to the line.
