Immortals

I didnt realise but the naming of immortals is down to rugby league week.

Would be good to do a revamp and get the independent commission to name some more players when the commission becomes official.

Just wondering who you guys would pick.

Lockyer and Johns are often discussed in the media. Supposedly Meninga is next up.

But there are alot of names that could fit in too. Lewis, Fittler, Langer, Sterling.

Lots there. But who would/should make it from the past Tigers/Wests players.

joey johns should be for sure

Joey needs to go a few years without doing something that give the game a black eye for starters . Mal might be in the same boat unfortunately for his comments from early last week .

I may be wrong but I believe the term Rugby League Immortal is copyright to Rugby League Week. It won't be up to the Independent Commission at all, it is the sole domain of Rugby League Week.

Of the current era, Mal, Fittler, Locky and Johns …in that order.

I would also consider a prop like Lazaurus.

BTW Tom, Lewis already is one.

Big Mal should be the next one followed by Fittler, Johns and Locky.

Lazaurus would be an excellent choice as well.

Sterlo, Johns, Lockyer and Lazarus. From the Tigers/Magpies side of things I reckon Pearce should be considered and I wonder why Tommy never got a nomination?

Johns is the best player I've seen play (since I was old enough to judge these things anyway), I'd rank Fitler second, Lockyer 3rd. I could never get that excited about Mal. He was big and mobile but I never thought he was overly skillful. Clyde was a better player in my opinion. Just my take on things.

I think Joey needs to pay for a few years for his sins Yoss . I have no issue with him being a Immortal but he has done some things which are inexcusable imo

I'm pretty certain the Immortal tag is for deeds in the Australian Jumper…

Big Mal, Fittler and Lockyer all possibly deserve to be considered.

RLW apparently held discussions a few weeks ago...

Maybe - depends on what your trying to recognise. If we're just talking straightout playing ability he should be first in line. If you factor in off-field stuff, maybe not, although didn't Gary Ablett make into the AFL Hall of Fame? His misdeeds make A Johns look like Mother Teresa…

Yeah but how many years did Ablett Sr have to wait and how many lesser lights got in before him

Only thing he didnt do was play in a winning premiership team, even though his team won the comp while he was touring with the Roos in 52

What an awesome RL CV…and probably the Magpies greatest ever.

But what's the point of that? Surely either you're in or you're not? Delaying entry doesn't really prove that much does it?

It would show the current players that just because you are a great footballer doesn't mean you can play up off the field . A champion is a champion both on and off the field . This is an issue a lot of the younger guys don't seem to get Yoss . A lot of players coming through should have to listen to Chris Lawrence and see how he has handled it all . He is the perfect role model for any up and comer .

I always understood the Immortals to be dominant in all levels…especially International.

Thats why IMO Mal is next in line as he had an enormous rep career. I had Johns down th list a bit due to him never really dominating at rep level. He had some good performances but wasnt ever fully dominant. Not to the level of some of his peers. Dont get me wrong, I think he was awesome but there are some in front of him for mine.

MOST of the names thrown around are backs. It always bothers me how the tough men miss out on the accolades.

I agree A Johns is the best footballer I have seen for some time . Someone mentioned Clyde and Lazarus , those guys definitely need recognition.

Oh no, that'd never do Ink, you can't upset the balance of the Gen Y universe. It has to be someone who's appeared on the Footy Show or at least played State of Origin. He also needs to have battled and beaten personal demons and then been interviewed by Phil Gould

What about a bloke who :-

Won 10 Premierships as a player

Captain/Coached 4 of those Premierships

As a Coach had a winning rate of 76%

19 Tests for Australia

14 games for NSW

A second rower in Team of the Century

Admitted to the Rugby League Hall of Fame

More bona fides than any other player mentioned in this thread

We were discussing the obvious ommission of Norm this week. Probably the greatest resume of any RL Player, but because he only played 19 Tests for Australia, we continue to presume this is the only reason RLW has not included him?!
