The Super League war was not good for the game at all. We do have Melbourne now which is good but they might not be able to survive financially without News Ltd. and might have to move to Gosford down the track. The ARL already had plans expanding nationally. If Super League didn't come along we would probably have a team in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth and a second Brisbane team. Norths maybe in Gosford too.

That's about 21 teams 23 if you include Wests and Illawarra….....Where are you going to get the quality of player to fill that amount of teams......

There is more to expansion than just puting a franchise in these places .......

As for the Storm....well they have been in the comp for 11 years and made losses in excess of 6mil a year every year...Money they get given for the privledge of playing out of Melbourne..I dont care if they sell out their new stadium in years to come......It still wont make them financially viable.......the Independant Commission will still have to give them money over and above what other clubs will recieve so we can remain "National"

So you are saying that if Melbourne start selling out the new stadium all the time they will still make a loss every year? Maybe it is justified keeping Melbourne in the competition if the money given to them is less then the extra money the competition get from tv rights by having Melbourne in the competition?

The ARL wouldn't have kept more than 20 teams in the competition. They were saying before the Super League/ARL war that there were probably too many teams in Sydney. Some Sydney teams would have been forced to form a joint venture, relocate or just play in the lower grades.

The Reds died because they weren't supported enough, but they should have been. They would be set by now and alot more people would be playing League over there by now.

Adelaide died because News Limited owned them and weren't making a profit out of it and they didn't want to pour millions of $$$ each year to both Adelaide and Melbourne. So they chose Melbourne.

Now if Super League didn't come along I am sure by 2010 the ARL would have had a team in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. They would have thought about the future and the good of the game and they would have supported them areas instead of caring about profits which is all News Ltd cared/cares about. News Ltd is still taking millions of $$$ out of the game now to cover the loses from the Super League/ARL war, instead of spending the money in areas of the game that need it. They are scum. I hated them then and I still have a grudge now. I used to see them sky writer planes draw the Super League symbol in the sky in the 90's. I hated them.

Plus there was already a second Brisbane team (South Queensland Crushers) and already a Gold Coast team. Also Norths would probably would have moved to the Central Coast aswell. Oh how things could have been so much better…

No….. what I am saying is Melbourne Storm should have to find their operating capital just like other clubs do in the NRL..Lets compare them to the JV apart from the initial set up grant...Wests Tigers have had to find their own way in generating the money it takes each year to run an NRL club....the Storm do not....they haven't ever had too....it's time they found a way don't you think?

The future losses for the Storm are News Ltd estamates BTW...what company isn't going to deflate these figues when they are trying to sell a bad debt.........

Good to see some intellitgent posts written I think an nrl team in perth has more hope than an afl team in western sydney.Perth while having more teams now force, perth glory and freo afl team they also have a lot more corporate dollars to throw around after the mining boom I think we could kill off the force because rugby at the moment truly is yawnion.

Yeah I think it about time now. It's understandable that they needed some help at the start because Melbourne is all about AFL but they have been successful on the field and have a new stadium so they so they should be more set now. It is good that they are getting more junior teams and that they have their own Toyota Cup team and a Melbourne team in the NSW Cup next year. They have made the last 4 grandfinals and I think they will get larger crowds at their new stadium. Howcome the Storm memberships aren't on sale till next month? You would think they would be on sale before Christmas because alot of people like their season memberships as Christmas presents.

Hmm the quote button isn't working properly I don't think. Geo didn't write all of that.

Isnt the blueprint for Melbournes funding got a 5 yr time limit. I think this is more then reasonanble.

If the game shrinks back to just Qld and NSW you can kiss ther NRL as it is today goodbye. Expansion teams need more funding, you have to spend money to make money.
