Independent Commission

I can see your point on his tenure at Souths and Balmain but it is a different kettle of fish being a RL coach as opposed to a RL administrator.

The pandering the Jones market share gets while in an election year is the true representation of his pull. It is not his ideas alone but moreso his ability to mobilise a large voice in short time. mass media runs the election cycle now and that is where he is handy

It has a time limit on it though. For example Ken Arturson is eligible though and would it really suprise you if the NSWRL put him in there under their nomination with a trade off for an old school QRL rep?

I would not be surprised by anything smeg!

I just don't believe we need to politicise the Independent Commission with individuals too closely aligned to party politics - and Alan Jones is totally blinded by his right-wing allegiances! His own boss Singo called him "the longest serving leader of the Liberal Party" at a recent function!!

He does not possess a capacity for objectivity or bi-partisanship - and that is the last thing the Commission needs!

This is the exact same reason why John Howard was rejected after Searle approached him to head up the Commission! And I would suggest any former Labor pollies would carry similar baggage - and therefore also be equally inappropriate!

The fact he also part owns a radio network that treats its exclusive license to broadcast rugby league with contempt - and uses its allotted air-time to play twee satirical songs - ingratiate Hadley & co's collective egoes - and ignore the game (all to maximise advertising revenue) - while laughably being named the Continuous Call Team proves that he does not act in the interest of rugby league!!!!

1\. Upgrades to some suburban grounds
2\. Implementation of a public transport strategy without enacting the Major Event plan. (something the NRL has not been able to acomplish)
3\. Increased lobbying for a staged exemption to Poker Machine taxes to be decided on based on community spending by the clubs

A non political one also

4\. Using his base of corporate support and trying to syphon some of those into sponsorship at all levels of the game.

Maybe he isn't the best candidate and I certainly wouldn't want him running the commission but as a commission member I would much rather have him there than the majority of ex players, Searle, Ribot and would much rather him there than any previous custodians of the NSWRL, QRL or ARL

Hmmm …...... I think its questionable at best to assume he could resolve any of those issues. The problem I have is that he is a political person with an allegaince to the conservative side of politics. While you have Federal Labour in power and people like Anthony Albanese (Labour member for Grayndler) and Chris Hayes (Member for Macarthur ??) and I think the Minister for sport Kate Ellis ........ you may end up in just another political gridlock not dissimiliar to the one they have in Canberra at the moment.

You need new people with new ideas with no baggage ....... easier said than done but it is meant to be an "Independant" commission. Surely there must be people of that ilk out there somewhere ......

I can see your point completely but I think we diverge on the issue of politics in the commission though.

I do not see it as a bad thing to have the commission with a few people who still move within that sphere of influence. There will be internal politics regardless and I like the idea of having a few professional combatants in the ring.

I was not however aware of his share of ownership of the broadcaster and that is an automatic exclusion for mine. Apologies to anyone if it has been mentioned previously as I must have skimmed over it

Knuckles there are people of that ilk out there but they would not want the role from where I view it. The people you refference make very good money with zero public spotlight and live comfortable relaxed lives. Many are actively involved in their sporting club in what code they choose. It seems to me that the spotlight of the commission itself is the very reason the candidates will never be perfect
