Is Benji Back?

Benji isn't the same player that he was and that is how he is being judged. I think he is a lot more of a complete player now but he has to continue playing solid low mistake footy for the rest of the season.

If he does that and runs it when the opportunity arises then he is probably worth his pay rate.

He still has mistakes in him, that's the issue.

His pass to Ayshford in the last few minutes against the Storm was an example: one of the most brain dead decisions I have seen in a while. The problem is he still has a couple of these sorts of plays in him every week. The best playmakers in the game do not.

For those awaiting the return of the magic step etc, wake up, it will never be what it was again, nor should we expect it. For those of us that are a little older all know that things change as time passes, and we have/are seeing this with Benji, as with many other players in the past.

Whilst he may not be excelling in this new role at the moment, there are signs that he can complete the transformation. If he can shed the now only occasional silly action from his game as well as a few kg's, a bit of pace will return to compliment his more controlled/complete game.

Basically, whilst he will never be "back", he can once again be a great player, albeit in a different form.

He is costing the club around 600 grand a year and that amount is about to rise due to a hand shake deal with Humpty, so the question has to be asked if he can ever get his game back to a level that is reflective of his pay packet. I really dont think so, but sometimes you dont know how good you have something till its gone.

One thing is for certain,as this team improves, Benji becomes a better option, but will hold back some real young talent???

Why ,where did he go ??

It was scary Benji looked like he was getting it v Melbourne until he threw the ridiculous pass to Ayshford

still can't understand Benji and his kicking game He can pin point kicks to fullbacks at will from 40-50 metres away yet others kicks spray everywhere

Have a look at Blake Ayshford's try last week. When Simona made the break, Benji was the ONLY one to sprint in support. If he hadn't, the movement would have ended at the half-way line where Simona was caught by the defence. And he had the vision to see the open spaces on the right side, where Robbie Farah linked up with him. Those are the things that champions do. He isn't as consistently brilliant as he once was, but he is still a wonderful player. Having said that, the club can't commit to a 4-year contract, there are so many good youngsters ready to emerge in First Grade in the next year or two.

Still needs to stop playing low percentages though, but I don't think that will ever happen. Those low percentage plays will come off more I guess as the young players get more used to him being unpredictable and expect the unexpected to a certain extent.

On that note, I think it was a good sign last week, when Simona made a break and Benji supported, he didn't try a chip kick or flick pass, just linked with Farah and we scored

I don't think there was anything wrong with the idea, just a terrible pass aimed at Ayshfords toes

There was plenty wrong with it because we were playing in torrential rain and were leading with just minutes left. Really no need for that sort of play.

suppose you didn't have an issue with the running on that last play v the Warriors with 3 to go in the semi in 2011

would of been a great play IF it came off , but it didn't

in those conditions you play the high percentage play ,simple , not the Benji brain snap

While it might seem like I'm bagging him, I'm not. Firstly our last few wins have happened in the wet, this creates more opportunities for backs as forwards tire out quickly, creating more space. Yes he might be coming into a better bit of form, but nothing from what we are used to. While mistakes have always been part of his game, you have to take the good with the bad sometimes. I don't think Benji has ever had a good kicking game, wether it be bomb or grubber. Can you imaging he had a pinpoint kick like Carney or Cronk, most people will want that in our team make up. Generally the one thing in both Benjis and WT favour is that both parties want to stick together for post career opportunities, but one party at the present has to realize and convince the other that it's best for both. Realistically I think a paycut is not a bad Idea if he can secure a job with the WT after his playing days are over. The other side of the coin is see ya later we don't need you back, Robbie can fill that role, after all he is a lifetime WT.
