2022 Wooden Spooners.

Bulldogs?

The team that just beat us 38-0 and have signed Burton, Addo-Carr, Tevita Pangai, Vaughn, Dufty and Naden?

Delusional.

We'll see. I am undecided who I am tipping for the spoon, but one round doth not make a season.

Luckily for me I'm not basing it off this one round. I basing it off this whole season + all the players the dogs have signed.

I think we need to look at our roster in a nuanced way. We can’t just say that Ivan recruited poorly so we shouldn’t go to market. I think we need to recruit strategically in a way that supports and augments our junior development. If you look at our 2005 roster there were some really astute buys that Sheens made in the previous years to guide and support the younger players coming through. Players like Hodgson, Prince, Whatuira, and Payton to compliment and ease pressure off Benji, Farah, Gibbs, Fulton and Halatau.

I think we need to take a similar approach. Recruit players that aren’t going to break the bank but that are reliable first graders that bring skills and experience to bridge the gaps. I know it’s easier said than done but I don’t see why we can’t take a similar approach to what Sheens has done previously.

This whole season where they won 3 matches and one of those was against us?

Tigers had a shocking season and we finished with 8 wins - that's two more wins than Bulldogs have managed in all of 2020-2021. Bulldogs didn't even have half as many wins as the team that came 15th.

They have such a long long way to go as a club and honestly I think you are blinded by the "sparkle" of shiny new recruits. I've seen armies of recruits come to battling sides over the years and years, and very often that does not transform the side into contenders. Normally contenders arise with their own core players, their own young standouts, and Bulldogs have very very few of those.

Burton is a very astute signing, I have no idea who they play to accompany him in the halves. Burton will get monstered when all the sides figure out (from Round 1 I expect) that he's doing everything alone. Bulldogs have no hooker, the guy they fielded yesterday is released and JMK is, I think, still the first-choice.

Who is playing fullback? Dufty? Guy can't even keep his spot at Dragons and they are as bad as Tigers. Meaney was their best yesterday and he's gone. Bill Hopoate is also gone, so they decisively lack experience in their backline. JAC will be OK if he ever sees the ball and if the inside men can ever trouble the defence.

Naden is a mug, no better than Nofo.

So you've named 6 prominent signings that Bulldogs have made, and 4 of those are rejects from another club. Literally - Tevita Pangai is being paid by the 3rd-lowest ranked club of 2021 to play for someone else.

I don't have any confidence in Trent Barrett as a coach - history of failure.

So maybe Dogs will improve, but I would be surprised if they are in finals contention at the end of the year. Maybe not spooners, but spooners 2022 is currently a 6-way race in my opinion. Everyone from Dragons down (on the ladder) is in a bad way.

Surely they r in contention for it

Ben Hunt St George player of the year 2021 - says it all.

They have some kids though, very much like us.

Mbye will carve us up

I suspect he will circle the game in his diary. Noticed he wasn’t in the captains run team photo, couldn’t wait to get the hell out.
