Is Vegas V'Landys undoing?

Waste of time. We need to address brain and health concerns before we push into the North American market. Hopefully we can lead the way.

I think Americans like the shock value of the game. They see it as “that game they play without helmets”, like it’s barbaric.

It is because the media owners have many different newspapers and media outlets under their ownership so that by saying "This Masthead" in a Nine owner newspaper it can be printed as is by SMH, The Age, Financial Review etc, where as if its a News Ltd journalist it can be printed by The Daily Telegraph, Herald Sun, Courier Mail etc.

The big change and use of the term increased since Nine bought SMH etc.
And as you said - News Ltd also use it with "mastheads" like The Australian - Daily Telegraph - Courier Mail etc...

It is about claiming attribution in an environment of rampant plagiarism!

didn’t really care to much for a split first round at first. Now starting to come around to the Vegas experiment. I dont really see rugby league making inroads into the USA market..more just a carnival atmosphere for rugby league fans looking for a holiday.

I think it's given the season opening a bit of a buzz. I'm looking forward to Sunday.

The Americans won’t take to the NRL…they still (and always will) call it “Rugby”…the tickets are $19 each, they have given away at least 10,000 tickets….Fox Sports 1 are showing the first game at 9:30pm eastern time And the 2nd game at 11:30pm ET…..PVL is hoping to secure Betting Agency agreements……it’s terrible how much influence gambling now has on the games revenue…and no doubt the results????

American betting agencies don't pay money to the sports that they use to gamble on, unlike here.
I don't know how VLandys will be making money from them.

I think by about year 3 of this experiment it will seriously start to lose any interest its gained the first couple of years
Hopefully it's succesful though and whenever we get our chance to have a crack at it we are performing like a professional sporting outfit should, and we don't embarrass ourselves and.any.prblemd they encounter early should be ironed out by then.
Just wondering if round 1 is the best time... Our teams are still way off their best that early

NRL won't take over any of the embedded sports in the USA, but we don't need that for this to be successful. The NRL is played in the NFL off season. I think the natural market is fans that like football and can get a fix in the off season.

Tickets sold is not where the revenue is, so I wouldn't place much emphasis on that if any.

The average TV viewership for Rd 1 NRL games in 2023 was 513,000 per match. The TV rights deal done with Fox Sports 1 in the USA will broadcast the game to 100 million Americans. I'm sure it's not lost on you that it's 4 times the total Australian population.

The question will be what number falls when the ratings come out.

I like that he is wanting to try something
It’s a marketing ploy plain and simple

This move isn’t to take over the US market it’s all about getting a piece of it & if he can do that successfully then he gains more $$$ for our games growth.

Be interesting to see what the $$ flows after year 5 v the cost output to do each year turns out to be.

When it was first floated as an idea i thought it would be at a regional ground with low crowd numbers. Looks like there will be a crowd of around 40K..which surprised me. Hope it’s a success like Magic round has become. Money wise.. it sounds like the NRL has a decent war chest..probably less risk doing this than buying Super League

Getting 40k+ is a very good result if the games were in Australia let alone in a country that has zero affiliation to the game.

15k roughly from Australia are meant to be attending mixed with a good amount from the UK and then 20k within the states. Mix isn’t bad really. We are lucky atm to get 15k fans at Cambo.

The play for the NRL isn’t fill the stadiums it’s about the streaming / betting cash - if they can get 10% growth via the US media/betting markets cashflow wise it funds a minimum 2 clubs annually.

I don’t think for a second realistically the NRL will take off in the states & be a threat but if they get a piece of the pie as an additional revenue stream it’s a big win for the game.
