If you really want to dive into why Luai became available for PNG, it comes down to HBG and their selfishness in pursuit of control.

Richo and Benji had Luai lined up to remove his exit clauses at the end of 2025. Had those clauses been removed, PNG couldn't have made an offer, Luai stays, and we’re likely pushing for a finals spot in 2026.

So why didn't he remove them? Simple: less than 12 months into his contract, HBG blew the club apart and pushed the CEO out.

In hindsight, Luai was completely justified in keeping those clauses in his contract. That isn't selling out on the club, that's smart, because it's only a matter of time before they stuff something else up.

I have thought that the whole Luai leaving the Tigers saga was not always a foregone conclusion

I think its fair to say the instability at the board room level (HBG blowing up the tigers board) would have played into his decision to leave the club, however I do not believe that he always intended to leave 2 years in to his 5 year deal...

Also it was right around the time that he left for PNG to check out the facilities, then signed, that 2026 started derailing for the Tigers..

I believe things could have certainly played out differently.. The direction of a club or any organisation really - is set by those who hold the power, and its well known who that is when it comes to Wests Tigers

What avenues are there available to affect the change though Gary. Like i posted earlier even if they listen, whats to stop them from reneiging in 2 years time to do a hostile takeover again. They have us fans by the berries. They own the joint with total control. The petitions last time worked cause there were those in the HBG board who were sympathetic to the cause and were willing. This time after the last 2 years, whos on their board now that would be willing to listen and apply pressure from within. HBG will just ride it out and hide behind the debunture system till the heat settles. Only way i could see permanent change without a sale is if Velandys demended it on behalf of the N.R.L and dictated the board make up, but being privately owned and seeing the appetite he had for it last year doubt very much he cares. Were just in a rock and a hard place because we have no avenue to affect any permanent change without the HBG boards blessing. A board set up so no matter how poor they perform they are untouchable.
