Yeah, brave move, you can't believe the Bronco's this year are the basically the same squad Griffin had.Gould talks him up but time will tell.

Broncos 2015 was nearly the same squad as Griffin had PLUS the recruitment of an Aussie test player, a kiwi test player and a bloke who is destined to become a superstar. That will make a difference to your clubs fortunes from one year to the next. Can't believe Penrith punted Cleary and headhunted 'Peter' Griffin….there must definitely be more to the Gus/Clearly fallout. Perhaps Ivan wasn't the yes man that Gus' ego would insist on having beneath him.

No question about who is running the show at Penrith - dont know what the role of the board is - no other coach approached, considered - Gus wanted Griffin and that's all that seemed to matter.

Has anyone thought of a rally for Ivan ….or do you think it's to late

Broncos were already on top of the ladder when Boyd came back a 1/4 of the way through the yr. And Blair, the way he copped it here for 3 yrs, there's no way he could have made that much of a difference.

Blair made a huge difference to the Bronco's, if you watched any of their games you would have seen for yourself or at least heard the commentators saying as much.

I know he did. I was pointing out the irony that he was bashed relentlessly for 3 yrs, but now people all of a sudden will credit him with turning the Broncos around.

Blair played like a busted clacker for the most part in his time with WT, that was why he copped a basting on here most weeks.
He wasn't as bad as some people made out but geez he was far from great. Obviously had a change in attitude this season.

I cant believe Penrith axed Clearly.

I think he is a terrific coach. I also dont think much of Griffen as coach, but really like him as a bloke (I dont know him, but the way he presents) so I would like to see him do well, the Panthers are a bit like us, they have a stack of talent coming through, just need to develop it successfully.

Stating the obvious, but there's something in this that we don't know about. The likely scenario is that Ivan had been sounded out for a return to NZ. This would be their chance for a tilt at the premiership with the cattle they've got and Ivan is the only coach other than Anderson to get them anywhere close to the silverware.

Cleary got them to one game from the grand final using 29 players and guys like Segeyaro, DWZ, Simmons and Wallace missing half the season.

They used 32 players this year, both their halves missed half the year along with their prodigious talent in Moylan. They were shot, no team can hope to compete with a toll that bad and Gould would know that. We're not talking Stuartesque failure ala Roosters '03 & '04.

Cleary/Warriors is a good footy mix, but Im pretty sure he want his kids educated in Australia.

As you say professional glory might take precedence.

Seems the warriors had nothing to do with the axing, I cant imagine Cleary lying about that.

As many have said, there has to be more than meets the eye.

panthers have done everything right off the field. they've employed great coaches, great S&C (their injuries just prove how much of a factor luck really is), set up good pathways but it just hasn't worked for them.

my issue is we have based our off field structure so much on panthers that it's a worry. we've even employed half of their off field personnel

Penrith are blessed with their pathways they could pick 3 SG Ball sides and be competitive.
They actually do very little in that outside their rep programs.
Even when they had no budget for junior development (dumbest move ever ) they still managed to bring through kids.

Ivan Cleary wants quick return as NRL coach after Panthers sacking
November 5, 2015 1:32am

IVAN Cleary has returned from a surfing holiday in the Maldives “absolutely committed” to getting another NRL head coaching job.

And just two weeks after he was sensationally sacked amid claims by Penrith boss Phil Gould that he was burnt out and needed a break, the 44-year-old declared he would be ready to start work as soon as an opportunity came up.

Despite ongoing speculation linking him to a possible move to the Wests Tigers or back to the Warriors, Cleary was adamant he had held no discussions with any club.

But he admitted he would open to all offers.

“I have not spoken to any other club about a head coaching job,” Cleary said.

“What I will say is that I am absolutely committed to being a head coach. I have never been in this position before. I don’t really know the answers.

“I will just have to see what comes up. There are not many jobs (available) so I would be a fool not to consider everything.

“At the moment there are none available so we will just see what happens. That is the position I am in.”

Asked if Penrith’s decision to cut him had made him hungrier, Cleary added: “I have always thought I was hungry so I don’t think it makes me hungrier.

“I guess it is just another experience. Not all the experiences are always good but I feel I will be better for it. I will be better for my experience at the clubs I have been at.”

After taking Penrith one game short of the grand final in 2014, Cleary was named Dally M coach of the year but the Panthers struggled in 2015 due to a crippling injury toll.

It was also rumoured that Cleary fell out with Gould over the decision to cut Trent Barrett after Barrett agreed to coach Manly.

Cleary would not buy into the debate and wanted it made clear that he held no animosity towards his former club Penrith.

“I was a bit shocked and I said that at the time,” Cleary said.

“But I thank Penrith for my time there. I honesty feel what I have done until this point is just getting me ready for the future.

“I started (as a head coach) pretty young. I was 34 (when he got his first job at the Warriors in 2006) and in fairness, a lot of the stuff I have learnt along the way have been lessons at the coal face as they say.

“So I feel I will be better for it. I honesty feel that. I think I have learnt the trade.

“I have done 10 years of two rebuilds (at the Panthers and the Warriors) so I have sort of seen it all, the good and the bad. And I feel like what I have behind me will only help me for the future.”

Asked if he was proud of his time at Penrith, Cleary said: “Yes. It was a rebuild, and it is not just me. All the staff did a really good job building the club for the future.

“And I think those foundations have been laid.”
