Ivan Cleary - Talkin Sport 2/5

Didn't get much out that interview other than this year is this year and next year will be different.

His comment on the capitancy was perfect and steered away from any negative talk. Looks like they have given up on Teddy as well.

Pretty average interview…didn't give much away

The things he didnt overstate anything. Talks a lot sense. The West Tigers need to develop a style built on toughness. The players that he is bringing in have these qualities.
He was surprised by Woods comments , doesn't know who is advising him. The things he is saying in the media doesn't sound like him

He believed Woods interview very much out of character and questioned who was giving him the advice.
Discreet dig at his manager I guess.
Tuknsy didn't really fire up.
Ivan certainly all over the Wests Tigers history
He acknowledged our 2005 success was built on attack, which the Tigers were renowned for however our next finals appearance being 5 years later and limited appearances thereafter

He mentioned that both the magpies and tigers pre - merger were known for their defence/toughness rather than attack.
Perhaps we will see the Wests Tigers go down that path and be seen as more defence focussed with element of toughness rather than attack

Got a feeling we'll see a change of captain soon.
Doesn't sound like Cleary is president of the Aaron Woods Fan Club.

I got the impression Woods will be remaining (C)

Thats the feeling I got last week when Cleary was interviewed. He didn't seem so certain this time.
Didn't seem impressed with Woods' interview.

Woods being out gives him the perfect excuse to remove him from the role. He doesn't have to strip him per say, he just keeps the C on whoever he gives it to when Woods is back. What's Woods going to do? I doubt he'll even care.

So did the fat arse wipe Peter 'too tuff' Tunks give it to Cleary or was he nowhere to be seen? He has no trouble bagging WT and the fans at every opportunity. His usual go is to be real quiet during the interview and then when they hang up, he come out all guns blazing.

Apart from Gav who is a mate of mine (think Kramer in Seinfeld), the others are just gold plated tools.

Yes the peice of crap was pretty quiet….he hasnt missed us for the last month...obviously one of those blokes who's only tough behind the microphone

Good summary

Ivan also asked whether he was coach as well as manager. He stated that when met with the board they answered all his questions before he even asked them, and that within the first half hour he knew the club was a good fit for him. He said that he knew he would have the support and the autonomy to deliver what was required of him. He also said that there is all this talk of instability, and that maybe he is an idiot, but he couldn't see it. He feels it is a club that is heading in the right direction.

Personally felt this was the biggest thing to come out of the interview.

As ive said before, most think Cleary is a good operator and no mug. Thats our general feeling and those in the game as well.

If the club is a wreck and a shambles and imploding, they did a damn good job of covering everything before he signed a contract. For a guy who had many options, how the hell did he get blinsided into signing on.

Two possibilities. He is stupid, or its not true. I think i will choose the latter.

Spot on, but that statement won't get any traction in the media as it goes against the basket case scenario that they all are pedalling

Absolutely correct. You can all see that woodsy is just trying to justify why he left. The club has been dignified and not defended and decended into the mire - good strategy. The press just choose to overlook & just forget the big picture which is:
* Certain people tried to max-out of the Balmain redevelopment and cause the Balmain partner into insolvency,
* NRL comes to rescue and appoints revised board
* West magpies step in and act highly respectfully towards the great Tigers heritage and we finally get a new Board
* The big 4 have the same manager as does Todd Payton, such manager who is related to Benny who had a part in the demise of the club in the first place.
*The big 4 want their man Todd appointed Coach.
* The new management appoint a great coach for the future who won't be intimidated by the agendas of other parties.
* The press then reports Benny's dismay….please explain that to me.

I often disagree with Phil Gould but I know what he thinks of Cleary and what we are doing!

forget the press -- papers are steadily losing business anyway - we are on the right track!!!

Tacky gets a mention

 I just listened to the interview, I can't believe they mentioned my rumour. I'm just so surprised that someone believed it. By the way, you can thank Born tiger for the idea.

Ivan will take no rubbish from anyone, seems doesn't matter who it is. I for one have full faith in Ivan, and as the saying goes, if you're not in, you're out!!! Seems like a few of those are finding their way out and I for one am not fussed.

That's good news, no drama and no headlines there so it will be forgotten by tomorrow's media, they'd rather talk to Klemmer and Sirro about all things WTs

That was a very interesting experiment into how the media use social media for content.
As Doc Carl would say…if your a true social scientist..experiment and write now the results.
I reckon the media get about 30% correct. The rest is just B.S.
It was interesting how quickly that got onto main stream sites and radio and raise as a question to the coach. It was also good to see the coach laughed and say I haven't heard that one.
Well done. Puts a lot of things into perspective.

Hes not stupid , he made sure he has full control over coaching. I still wonder if he really knew the depth of the problems in the club though.
I'd bet there's a let out clause in his contract just in case
After what he's seen and heard obout the last 4or 5 years. I would think that he would want an exit if the club didn't come up with the players he wants.
