People say Ivan wont play under Gould. I say if Ivan goes to Penrith then Gould steps aside. His 5 year contract just means a bigger payout for the grub when he pulls the pin.
There is no way known that Gus will stand aside for a coach. He is becoming the Denis Fitzgerald like figure (Emperor of Parramatta"). He won't abdicate his power base for the good of the Panthers - he will want to retain it at all costs.
The past week has shown some really interesting insigths into the Panthers:
1) The chair and GM not communicating about a head coaching role - this seems highly implausible or a significant issue exists between the two.
2) Gus' decision to oust Griffin was based on Giffin's position to be untenable if news was leaked of the coaching offer to Cleary. In my opinion, Gus was looking for any excuse and this seemed like the most expedient method. What he misjudged was the media backlash and Tigers staunch position.
3) Griffin's 360 interview took the Panther's by surprise. Gus went on channel 9 and the media machine went into action. Cirraldo then backs Gus' story to paint Griffin as the "bad guy" and Gus as the hero who saved and protected the Club. The truth of the matter will never be fully known but it is most likely somewhere in the middle.
I see Ivan as having high levels of credibility and integrity. An atmosphere where he feels needs to compromise these ideals to suit Gus will not suit him. Nor will an environment where he is constantly looking over his shoulder and questioning his own decisions.
Ironically, I could see Ivan joinng the Panthers, I just can't see him doing it while Gus is there - and I can't see Gus leaving any time soon,
