Gould claimed at the time that he sacked Cleary because he was concerned about his 'welfare' and that Cleary had said he'd expected it.

It's very entirely different from what he has said about Griffin's sacking and before that, Matt Elliott.

Ivan Cleary might see things differently, but I have always felt that Gould has left the door open.
 
Ivan can’t stop the journos making headlines, we should calm down and wait for Ivan to reply which I think he will do sooner rather than later.

It can also mean that he knows Nathan Cleary is likely to leave and they have several young halfback prospects who are far more cheaper. Cleary will demand $1M to stay. Or do you take a yet to be established half next to Maloney for $400K. Wow, what a saving!! And really, have you lost taht much?

I've been told this is 100% correct. N. Cleary was one of several that gave an ultimatum that he would definitely leave if Griffin was still there. Griffin was not at all popular amongst the players. I was even told that Griffin demanded players NOT to smile before the game. I am 100% serious and this is indicative of his style.

Gould is no different o anyone else, will say and do whatever he wants. Truth is irrelevant.

Gould would look like an idiot to bring back a coach he sacked three years ago. Anyway, the target is Bennett. Bennett will not be at the Broncos next year if they don't extend his contract after that. he will NOT stay there if it looks like he was sacked for another coach. He is waiting to hear from the board, which is the delay. Bennett has been approached on a two year deal. And for those saying he couldn't have Gould looking over his shoulder, that wont happen. He is the ONLY coach that would not require Gould to do this and Gould knows it. I've also heard that Gould is considering moving on when the premiership is won, whether this year or next. He believes the Panthers need to stand on their own two feet and his work is done.

Being approached and leaving are two different things. Its not Cleary or any coaches fault if they were approached. Do you think Penrith are the only club that may have had discussions with him? Every club worth their salt would make enquiries. if it did happen, it was weeks ago and Cleary has said since then that he likes it at the WT. If anyone thinks a new coach was only approached yesterday morning before the decision, youre mistaken.
 
Breaking news: Ivan offered a 4 year contract at the panthers and to ask for a release within the next 48 hours. Just heard it on some am radio show.

Penrith have offered a four-year deal to Ivan Cleary that could force the Wests Tigers to search for their fifth coach in eight years.

NRL.com can reveal the Panthers have put forward a deal to Ivan to return to the club next season until at least the end of 2022, a move that would likely trigger a multi-year extension for son Nathan at the Panthers.

Wests Tigers chairwoman Marina Go told NRL.com that if Cleary asked the club for a release he would not be granted one.

The Wests Tigers have been growing increasingly confident of luring Nathan to the club under Ivan from 2020, however the balance of power has taken a complete turn with the Panthers on the verge of securing a monumental dual coup in reuniting father and son.

Ivan informed the Tigers board on Monday night he had met with a high-ranking Panthers official two weeks ago, believed to be Panthers chairman Dave O'Neill, about the prospect of taking up a deal with Penrith, where he was sacked at the end of 2015.

It's understood O'Neill has a very close relationship with Ivan from their time together at the Panthers and has been instrumental in orchestrating the move to lure him back.

The news caught the Tigers off-guard and has cast a huge cloud over whether he will see out the final two years of his deal despite Go reiterating the club’s desire for Ivan to remain at the helm until at least 2020.

"It is my view that Ivan will be with the Wests Tigers as head coach for at least another two years as he has a contract with us," Go told NRL.com on Monday night.

The tug-of-war over the Cleary family could result in Ivan asking for a release from the final two years of his deal with the Tigers in the next 48 hours.

Ivan’s potential return would also result in Phil Gould, who told Ivan his services would no longer be required three years ago, taking on lighter duties with the club’s football operations and return to overseeing the club’s program.

It’s believed Gould only took a more hands-on approach in 2018 because of the concerns over the way Griffin was running things.

"The Ivan decision I made was in his best interest and my best interest," Gould said on Tuesday morning.

"I believed I was right at the time and that’s why the decision was made."
 
Wow this just escalated, there goes my house lol. Surely we wouldn’t release him. Put a $1million release fee on him if they really want him.
 
Well who is the Tigers next coach looks done and dusted … if Cleary does leave it would certainly be a dog act . Talking to the Panthers for 2 weeks oh dear while not interested in getting his own team up to beat all so rans.. goes to show what sort of a bloke he is !

It’s obvious now he’s been made an offer.

He should have turned it down immediately. Why didn’t he?

How would the playing group be feeling?
 
Integrity, honour, standards? Let him go now, playing group deserve better than this

The problem is I’ve lost all respect for him for him. How could he meet up with them in the first place. If it is true that meeting occurred, then thats a very bad reflection of his character.
 
It's over. The Penrith board are gutless for handing all their power to Gould. The NRL should step in and prevent the deal given Penrith are knowingly inducing Cleary to breach a contract.

If Cleary signs elsewhere he has SHAFTED all
Of us as his heart has not been in it for months ..
