If they havent heard this before then they havent been paying attention
I reckon.
Can Ivan Cleary really have said anything new that at least one of the previous 2 or 3 coaches hasn't said? Some of the stuff works because he's new and they are perhaps more receptive to a new voice, a new angle / approach. They'll get used to him / bored of his "rules" eventually.
I am guessing that a lot of it has to do with the future uncertainty for the roster. It does go back about what people said about JT not penalising non-performers. To quite a large extent JT didn't have the depth of roster to allow him to drop players at his whim, he was still getting over deals struck by previous managements. But also the fact was that the lineup didn't change much over 2.1 years and players get complacent.
Bring in a new coach with an essentially open roster, free cap space and lots of players off contract - ideal situation to pressure the players into bringing out their best performances. For all the criticism of having many players off contract at once, I've said this before, in some ways it's an advantage at this time, particularly in advance of the next TV deal money and salary cap increases. No club in the competition has the potentially free cap space that Tigers have, with so many very high quality players still off-contract. It's a unique situation and a perfect opportunity for a roster overhaul, if that is what is required - and frankly, if you shake up your board and financial partners, sign a new CEO, sign a new coach, new support staff, what is left but a roster shake up?
