Jack Buchanan moves a step closer to his NRL dream

I agree with alot of you Matt Groat was pushed too early would rather see this kid go through and learn his trade well so that he will cope better when his time does come which I'm sure it will at some stage

Bodenes body shape and running style really does suit that edge running backrower who can also muck in up the guts when required.

I think Fulton is probably going to start the season on the bench.

Moving Pettybourne to the bench would make sense from an impact POV as well.

Interesting times ahead leading into Round 1 regardless

I'd use Bodene Thompson ahead of him at this stage. Not as tall as Buchanan, but stronger and showed very good leg drive against the Eels. He hit the line and kept driving forward and will get better yet.

i see sheens has left his imprint on alot of you.

**Really? How do you figure Bon? You see, I was at the game last Saturday night and the difference between Buchanan and Thompson was quite apparent.** When Buchanan hit the line, he pretty much got stopped on the mark. He didn't get driven back, but he didn't continue to surge forward like Galloway and Woods do. Thompson on the other hand did continue to push forward when he hit the line and was surprisingly impressive for his second game in a long time and may prove to be better at prop than in the backrow.

So next time please spare me the Sheens crap. I'm more than capable of forming my own opinion and I'm happy Sheens is gone.

meh thompson would of been a sheens fave :stuck_out_tongue: i would perfer we used youngsters though this year cause it should be a rebuilding type year

centre turned backrower now prop.
isn't that the type of thing you complained about with sheens.

a guy who can cover centre or prop.
something wrong in that picture.

playing prop isn't about leg drive.

Nothing wrong with that picture at all actually as i think you missed my point. Fact is Thompson was given a run at prop by Potter, not Sheens, and the other fact is he did it quite effectively, moreso than young Buchanan who is still learning and developing. And you're right, playing prop isn't about leg drive, it's about going forward, dominating the ruck and building a platform for the rest of the team to work off. Thompson just happened to do it effectively.

Thompson is only 23? Hardly over the hill.

doesn't matter if it is sheens, potter you or me.
it is still the same conversion.
for mine, you have it backwards with thompson and bmm.
defensively bmm isn't up to scratch in the backrow.maybe thompson isn't either, but we will start to find out on sat night.

BMM and Thompson were both fine defensively against the eels. The roosters will be a tougher test but BMM is definitely fitter than this time last year.

I agree Willow. Thomspon was impressive on saturday night against Parra. It is interesting to note Robbie's comments in Buchanan here as I am sure I saw Robbie give him a gobfull after his second hapless play-the-ball error. A young gun for sure, and I am glad we have him, but he is more of the future of the club than the present. It will be great to see how he goes against the chooks.

I have no problem with the likes of Buchanan and others at there development stage thinking positive and pushing for an NRL spot! It's refreshing that the club have quite a few in this position can only lead to the club becoming stronger.

buchanan was from the dragons i believe, probably one of the best props in the comp. Better than ours. I think our props are still in the U20's and aren't amazing enough to get the callup when we have galloway, woods, thompson, bmm, gavet, groat and the like

so where are the props that won U20s last year? Buchanan was not in that team.

Fotuaika may be one to watch out for later in the year. Not one of the taller props going around, but he's powerfully built and as strong as an ox, he hits the line hard. Wearing a lot of strapping around his left knee (I think it's his left) and he looks be carrying some niggling injuries if last weekend is anything to go by. He's got the potential to play FG for sure, but Buchanan definitely has the jump on him at the moment and looks fitter than Mosese.

Nathan Brown is playing in the NYC again this year too.

im pretty sure potter is just blooding him.. its likely we will use him round 1 if woods is out (from the bench) as bell is coming back this week from an injury…

Thanks for the sensible answer..( lot of wackos on here ), I was aware Buchanan played for StGI but considering we won the comp I was just unsure of where our U20 props were situated.

My sincerest apologies, that comment was not directly aimed at you. Yes Buchanan did play for StGI last year and had a big reputation, but StGI kept the one THEY wanted.

My main concern , as I mentioned ,was that we won the comp and I was hopeful that at least of the props may have been up to 1st grade ( if needed ).
Regards.

Look at full strength he is probably realistically option 5-6 in our front row stocks , but can't wait to see him and a few others against the Roosters even off the bench

Id have him a bit higher up the list, was very impressive in NYC last year, problem is we have a number of blokes all abnout the same, they look talented and have potential to be very good , but are a little bit short of NRL or at the very least unproven.

Ive heard contrasting views on Buchanan's game on the weekend, it seems most are saying he has good work rate, Willow (and a couple of others) have said he did not take the ball forward very well, a good judge i spoke to said he carried the ball nicely and was impressed with his speed of the play the ball. **Also commented he was impressed he took first hit (or early hit ups after backs) up a number of times. obviously the hardest hit up to take**. Fair to say the jury is still out.

For sure, any prop that lines up to take the down and dirty work with the first hit-up in a set is one to go with, give me an effort player over a bloke that is looking for the easy kill anyday. We need that more than anything.
